Sonya Yoncheva -- seen quite recently in the Met's HD-transmission of Verdi's
"Luisa Miller" -- makes a rare excursion into the operatic world of
Claudio Monteverdi, specifically in performing the title role in his 1643 work
"L'Incoronazione di Poppea." As performed in this summer's Salzburg
Festival, it can be heard LIVE on Saturday (August 18) on ORF (Austria).
If the
operas of Antonio Salieri appeal to you, you won't want to miss the May 19,
2018 performance of his comic opera "La Frera di Venezia" (1772). As
performed in Schwetzingen, it can be heard this Saturday on German Radio.
A more familiar
work -- Gounod's "Faust" -- is featured on NPR as part of its
continuing series of broadcasts from Lyric Opera of Chicago's 2017/2018 season.
The Gounod piece was performed there in March of this year.
And once
again, Swedish Radio is giving us a chance to hear soprano Birgit Nilsson at
her considerable best as she performed the role of Amelia in the January 12,
1963 Met broadcast of Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera." With tenor
Richard Tucker and baritone Robert Merrill singing in this same performance,
this one is bound to appeal to those of us who appreciated and enjoyed the
considerable talents of these performers who regularly enthralled us back in
the 60s.
