Semiramide
Rossini’s epic is set in ancient Babylon, now modern-day Iraq, a kingdom which flourished between the 18th and sixth centuries BCE. While the opera does include a handful of local details for color, including the legendary Hanging Gardens, Rossini and Rossi were more concerned with establishing a feeling of legend and wonder than presenting any true historical accuracy.
This
masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks makes a rare Met appearance—its first
in nearly 25 years—with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto
cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon,
who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, a trouser role sung by
Elizabeth DeShong. Javier Camarena, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Ryan Speedo Green
complete the stellar cast.
ESTIMATED RUN TIME: 3 HRS. 29 MIN.

This coming Saturday (March 10), soprano Angela
Meade takes on the challenging title role in Rossini's "Semiramide"
which will be receiving an HD-transmission at certain local movie theatres.
This LIVE performance from the Met may also be heard on several internet radio
stations.
There's, in fact, lots more opera available on Saturday to
those of you who might prefer to stay home and give the Rossini opera a pass.
Of course, there's yet another performance of Bizet's "Carmen" on
Saturday's schedule. A recent Royal Opera House of
London performance of this work can be heard on Radio 3 (BBC).
Another popular French opera -- Gounod's "Faust" --
can be heard on Espace2 in a February 2018 performance that took place in
Geneva.
One of Verdi's lesser-known operas -- in this case, "I
Masnadieri" (1847) -- is scheduled to be broadcast on Radio 3 (RAI), as it
was performed this past January in Rome.
Opera fans who may want to listen to something a bit
off-the-beaten-track may opt for the recent performance from Essen of Heinrich
Marschner's "Hans Heiling" (1833) which can be heard on German Radio.
Although not well-known nowadays, Marschner's operas were once highly regarded
by none other than Richard Wagner, and many music historians consider him to
be an important link between Weber and Wagner in the German opera
repertory. (As a side-note, a friend of mine used to work with one of Marschner's
great-great-grandchildren, right here in Massachusetts!)
Then on Sunday, Poulenc's "Dialogues of the
Carmelites" appears once again, this time in a LIVE performance from
Bologna on RAI.
Alternatively, on Sunday, there's more Verdi, as
"Traviata" is being broadcast on French Radio, as it was performed
last month in Paris.
Enjoy!
