A nice variety of operas are on tap in the days ahead, with a LIVE performance of Mozart's "Cosi fan Tutte" scheduled for tomorrow evening at 7:25 p.m. This is another of the Met's weekly FREE audio-streams.
Then on Friday (March 16), another delightful operatic comedy comes to us, this time via RAI's Radio 3, as a LIVE performance of Rossini's "Barber of Seville" is transmitted, direct from Turin.
On Saturday, the Met matinee broadcast is of Richard Strauss's "Elektra" which can be heard on several internet radio stations.
Also on Saturday, ORF (Austria) is providing interested listeners a rare opportunity to access Friday night's performance from Vienna of Gottfried von Einem's "The Visit of the Old Lady" (premiered in 1971). Anyone who may be familiar with the 1964 film "The Visit" -- starring Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn -- will have an idea of what to expect, plot-wise, except that von Einem's opera opts for the tragic ending (the brutal killing of the Anthony Quinn character) rather than the more "sanitized" version depicted in the film, wherein the character remains alive, totally humiliated and dishonored. And (of course), Ingrid Bergman in 1964 could hardly be considered "an old lady" -- a far cry from the deformed and vengeful old lady depicted in the opera.
Of primary interest to fans of the operas of Giuseppe Verdi (isn't that most of us?) would be the 2 video-streams coming up, the first one taking place on Saturday with a LIVE performance from Stockholm of "Aida." This one can be viewed on OperaVision.
And on Sunday (March 18), you can watch a LIVE video of Verdi's "Les Vepres Siciliennes" as performed in Munich.
As a side-note, I'd like to point out that OperaVision has a stunning line-up of opera videos that have been scheduled in the weeks ahead: There's Rozycki's "Eros & Psyche" (from the Polish National Opera) on 3/21, Offenbach's "Blaubart" (from Berlin) on 3/23, Wagner's "Parsifal" (from Antwerp) on 4/1, Verdi's "Il Corsaro" (from Valencia, & starring tenor Michael Fabiano) on 4/8, Verdi's "Traviata" (from Oslo) on 4/14, and Donizetti's "La Favorite" (from Florence) on 4/26 -- not to mention several noteworthy opera videos that were recently shown and can still be accessed on their website.
Enjoy!
