Sonya Yoncheva as Tosca |
Puccini’s melodrama
about a volatile diva, a sadistic police chief, and an idealistic artist has
offended and thrilled audiences for more than a century. Critics, for their
part, have often had problems with Tosca’s rather grungy subject matter,
the directness and intensity of its score, and the crowd-pleasing dramatic
opportunities it provides for its lead roles. But these same aspects have also
made Tosca one of a handful of iconic works that seem to represent opera
in the public imagination.

The Opera House’: How the New Met Was Born
Fred
Plotkin sees a new documentary that tells the story of the evolution and
creation of the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in 1966. Jan 23, 2018
Of vital interest to many opera-lovers this coming weekend would probably be the LIVE HD-transmission from the Met on Saturday afternoon of Puccini's "Tosca." The work, which can be seen at select movie theaters and heard on several internet radio stations, will feature Sonya Yoncheva in the title role, Vittorio Grigolo as Cavaradossi, and Bryn Terfel as Scarpia.
Another Puccini opera will be getting the video treatment this week as Opera Vision presents a performance from Turin of "Turandot." This performance premieres tomorrow (Thursday, January 25) and should be available for several weeks afterwards for one's viewing and listening pleasure.
More Italian opera comes to us on Saturday with a broadcast from Vienna of Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda" -- a viable alternative for those opera fans who might prefer to give the Met's "Tosca" a pass. The Donizetti work can be heard on ORF (Austria).
Then on Monday evening (Jan. 29) at 7:25 pm, the Met is giving us another chance to hear Roberto Alagna singing the leading tenor roles in both Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" and Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" as a free LIVE audio-stream.
Finally, while most opera buffs may have some degree of familiarity with Gounod's "Faust" and "Romeo & Juliette" -- how many of us have ever heard a single note of his last completed stage work -- "Le Tribut de Zamora" (1887)? BR Klassik is transmitting a LIVE performance from Munich of this rarely heard 4-act opera on Sunday (Jan. 28). This is probably one's only chance to ever hear this opera since so many of these obscure works seem to sink back into oblivion after an initial revival, only to be replaced on operatic schedules with even more performances of "Carmen" & "La Boheme" & "Don Giovanni" ... which may (or may not) be a good thing, depending on one's preferences, of course!
Enjoy!
