A SUSAN FROEMKE FILM
The
Opera House
![]() |
Met Opera Chandelier |
The Opera House, a new
film by award-winning documentary filmmaker Susan Froemke surveys a remarkable
period of the Metropolitan Opera’s rich history and a time of great change for
New York. Featuring rarely seen archival footage, stills, recent interviews,
and a soundtrack of extraordinary Met performances, the film chronicles the
creation of the Met’s storied home of the last 50 years, against the backdrop
of the artists, architects, and politicians who shaped the cultural life of New
York City in the ’50s and ’60s. Among the notable figures in the film are famed
soprano Leontyne Price, who opened the new Met in 1966 in Samuel Barber’s
Antony and Cleopatra; Rudolf Bing, the Met’s imperious General Manager, who
engineered the move from the old house to the new one; Robert Moses, the
unstoppable city planner who bulldozed an entire neighborhood to make room for
Lincoln Center; and Wallace Harrison, whose quest for architectural glory was
never fully realized.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Mostly
mainstream operas on the internet in the days ahead, beginning on Friday
(January 12) with a performance from Hannover of "Die Fledermaus" by
Johann Strauss. This one can be heard on NDR Kultur.
On
Saturday, the LIVE matinee broadcast from the Met is the familiar
"Cav/Pag" combination, with tenor Roberto Alagna singing the leading
tenor roles in both operas.
Also on
Saturday, one of Donizetti's most delightful scores -- "The Daughter of
the Regiment" -- can be heard on ORF (Austria) in a LIVE performance from
the Vienna State Opera.
For
something different, there's a performance from Dresden that took place in
December 2016. The opera -- really, a musical -- is Leonard Bernstein's
"Wonderful Town" which had its premiere back in 1953. Opera fans who
enjoy his later score -- "West Side Story" -- may want to check this
one out. Incidentally, the performance being broadcast is actually the premiere
of the German-language version of the score.
A
weekend of opera broadcasts wouldn't be complete without at least one
performance of Puccini's "La Boheme," would it? On Sunday, if you
tune in to French Radio, you can listen in to a LIVE performance of the work
from Paris, with soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Mimi. As a point of interest to some
potential listeners, this is the "outer-space" production of
"Boheme" which has recently been receiving rather mixed reviews --
one of those you-either-love-it-or-hate-it productions. In any case, without
the visuals, this radio broadcast shouldn't pose any difficulties for most
opera fans.
To
complete one's listening enjoyment in the days ahead, there's a LIVE broadcast
of another of Donizetti's most popular scores, as the Met is offering a FREE
audio-stream on Tuesday (Jan. 16) at 7:25 p.m. of "L'Elisir d'Amore"
with tenor Matthew Polenzani as the love-sick Nemorino.
Enjoy!
