OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

The Met's Saturday afternoon radio broadcast this weekend is the October 8, 2016 performance of Wagner's "Tristan & Isolde" with tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano Nina Stemme singing the leading roles, as they did in the HD-transmission earlier this season.

An opera dealing with yet another pair of doomed lovers comes to us via German Radio when we are given a LIVE broadcast from Kassel of Gounod's "Romeo & Juliette."

Since the twin siblings Siegmund and Sieglinde are treated as doomed lovers in Wagner's "Die Walkure" I suppose we can add them to the quite extensive list of operatic characters who never get a chance to lead full and happy lives. (Not many of them do, do they?) In any case, ORF (Austria) is broadcasting a LIVE performance from Salzburg of this opera on Saturday.

Alas, Wally and her lover Hagenbach meet a similar fate (getting killed in an avalanche - !!!) in Catalani's "La Wally" which Radio 3 (RAI) will be broadcasting on Saturday. The performance being aired is one that took place in Piacenza on February 7 of this year.

But wait! RAI's Radio 3 has yet another tragedy in store for us on Sunday! Featuring the dysfunctional family to end all dysfunctional families, "Elektra" (by Richard Strauss) comes to us LIVE from Naples.

Well, with Wally and Hagenbach dying in an avalanche in Catalani's opera, it's relatively easy to accept Aida and Radames meeting their end after having been buried alive in a tomb in ancient Egypt. Yes, it's Verdi's "Aida" in a LIVE performance from the Met as one of their free audio-streams. Check it out tomorrow evening at 7:25!

Enjoy!

DAVE
