Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust
For
Jews during the Holocaust, there wasn't much reprieve from the despair and
horror surrounding them, but music-particularly that of violins, which hold an
important role in Jewish culture-offered temporary solace and a glimmer of
humanity. Violinists in concentration camps were sometimes treated better and
even spared their lives because of their ability to play this important
instrument. Narrated by Adrien Brody ("The Pianist" and "The
Grand Budapest Hotel"), VIOLINS OF HOPE: STRINGS OF THE HOLOCAUST follows
the journey of Israeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein in his efforts to restore
violins recovered from the Holocaust, and captures the lessons and highlights
the music the instruments now bring to others. These special artifacts from the
Holocaust, which Weinstein has dubbed the "Violins of Hope," include
instruments that were played by Jewish prisoners in concentration camps and
others that belonged to the Klezmer musical culture. The program chronicles the
journey of the instruments from Weinstein's small workshop in Tel Aviv, Israel,
where he has worked for two decades to repair the violins to Cleveland, where
they were brought in 2015. During this U.S. visit, the violins were on display
for the community as part of a traveling exhibit, used as teaching tools in
classrooms, and played by music students and orchestras.
OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Of
great interest -- especially for fans of superstar soprano Anna Netrebko --
will surely be the upcoming HD-transmission on Saturday (April 22) of
Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." This LIVE event, direct from New
York's Metropolitan Opera, features Netrebko in the pivotal role of Tatyana,
one which she also performed a couple of seasons ago (also at the Met & as
an HD-transmission). This performance can also be accessed (audio only) on
several internet radio stations.
On
ORF (Austria), there's a recent (March 31) performance from the Vienna State
Opera of Massenet's "Werther." As a point of special interest, this
is the version (which Massenet himself prepared) in which the title role is
written to be performed by a baritone, rather than the familiar
"tenor" version that is usually encountered.
German
Radio, on the other hand, has scheduled a rather unusual double-bill: It's
Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" (most often paired with
Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci") now being paired with "A Santa
Lucia" by the obscure Italian composer Pierantonio Tasca. This piece
premiered shortly after the Mascagni work (in 1892, to be exact) & was
often performed with "Cavalleria" back then -- until, of course,
preference went to Leoncavallo's opera. In any case, these two operas can be
heard on Saturday in a performance that originally took place in Dessau on
April 1 of this year.
Then
on Sunday (April 23), Radio 3 (RAI) will be broadcasting a LIVE performance
from Naples of Verdi's ever-popular "La Traviata."
And
on Tuesday (April 25), the Met will be offering a FREE live audio-stream of
Wagner's "Flying Dutchman."
Enjoy!

October 2016 performance (from Barcelona) of Verdi's "Macbeth" has
been uploaded to YouTube & can be seen here (without subtitles):
Fans
of soprano Kristine Opolais and/or tenor Marcelo Alvarez may want to check out

French subtitles):
