OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Select
area movie theatres this coming Saturday (March 11) will be showing the LIVE
HD-transmission from the Met of Verdi's "La Traviata." The cast is
headed by soprano Sonya Yoncheva, tenor Michael Fabiano, and baritone Thomas
Hampson. As usual, the audio-only of this performance can be accessed on many
internet radio stations.
Perhaps
not quite as popular as "La Traviata," Gounod's "Faust" is
known and loved by many opera fans as well. It may be heard on Radio 3 (RAI) in
a performance that took place in Florence on January 22 of this year.
Another
French opera -- this one by Massenet -- can be heard on ORF (Austria).
"Don Quichotte" -- one of Massenet's final works -- was performed in
Vienna last Wednesday, and it is this performance that is being broadcast on
Saturday.
If
you happen to be in the mood for an obscure 20th century opera, you may want to
tune in to German Radio for a broadcast of Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg's
"Aladin" (1941). It's a LIVE performance from Braunschweig, &
opera fans with conservative tastes need not worry, since Atterberg (whose 6th
Symphony won 1st prize in 1928, honoring the 100th anniversary of the death of
Franz Schubert) usually writes in a basically tonal style.
Enjoy!
DAVE
