IDOMENEO
“Here is the Met at its
best. … [James] Levine conducts, drawing a refined and affecting performance
from the great Met orchestra and chorus and an impressive cast” (New York
Times). Matthew Polenzani gives a “poignant, gripping performance” (New York
Times) as the king torn by a rash vow; mezzo-soprano Alice Coote “exudes noble
passion and dignity” (Financial Times) in the trouser role of his son Idamante;
soprano Nadine Sierra sings “with expressivity and tenderness” (New York Times)
as Ilia; and soprano Elza van den Heever “triumphs” (New York Times) as the
volatile Elettra, who loves Idamante to the bounds of madness.

R. Strauss’s
ELEKTRA
Nina Stemme sings Confrontation Scene:
The genius director Patrice Chéreau (From the House of the Dead) didn’t live to see his great Elektra production, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Met. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme—unmatched today in the heroic female roles of Strauss and Wagner—who portrays Elektra’s primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. Legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier is chilling as Elektra’s fearsome mother, Klytämnestra. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens are Elektra’s troubled siblings. Chéreau’s musical collaborator Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Strauss’s mighty take on Greek myth.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
If you happen to be a big fan of the operas of Mozart,
you have 3 of his best works being broadcast over the next few days, the first
one being a broadcast of "The Magic Flute" tomorrow (Thursday). You
can hear it, LIVE from Florence, on Radio 3 (RAI).
Then on Saturday (March 25), there are two Mozart
operas being offered on internet radio, with the Met giving us an opportunity
to hear "Idomeneo" with tenor Matthew Polenzani singing the title
role.
Radio 4 (the Netherlands), on the other hand, is
airing the March 4, 2017 performance of "Don Giovanni" (a Reisopera
production).
Also on the Dutch Radio 4 station, during the morning
hours here in RI, it's a LIVE broadcast from Amsterdam of "Capriccio"
-- the last completed opera by Richard Strauss.
French opera also appears on Saturday's schedule, with
a broadcast on BBC Radio 3 of a recent performance from the Scottish Opera (in
Glasgow) of Debussy's "Pelleas & Melisande" which can be accessed
during the next several days following the broadcast, if you choose to do so.
For fanciers of Italian opera from the 19th century,
you can check out Swedish Radio's LIVE broadcast from Malmo of Ponchielli's
"La Gioconda."
Enjoy!
DAVE
