OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

The Met's Saturday matinee broadcast this weekend brings us a performance that actually took place during the fall of 2016. The opera to be heard is none other than what many people consider to be Rossini's crowning achievement (in any event, it's his LONGEST opera): "William Tell." It also happens to be one of the first grand operas ever to be presented (along with Auber's "La Muette de Portici" & Meyerbeer's "Robert le Diable").

On Radio 4 (the Netherlands), you can hear a work composed a couple of centuries earlier: Claudio Monteverdi's "Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria" (1640) which, as the title suggests, is based on the 2nd half of Homer's epic "The Odyssey." The matinee performance being broadcast is a LIVE one from Amsterdam and can be heard during the morning hours here in RI.

Jonas Kaufmann fans, take note: On Saturday afternoon the Bavarian State Opera (Munich) is presenting a free LIVE video-stream of Giordano's "Andrea Chenier" (complete with English subtitles), starring Mr. Kaufmann in the title role. This is a rather recent addition to this opera company's line-up of operas being video-streamed during the current 2016/2017 season.

On the other hand, if you're a fan of the operas of Mozart, you have two choices coming up in the days ahead. On Saturday, Radio 3 (RAI) is offering a performance of "The Abduction from the Seraglio" as given in Bologna this past January 20.

Then on next Tuesday evening (March 21), the Met's FREE live audio-stream features a performance of "Idomeneo" with tenor Matthew Polenzani in the title role.

However, you can kick-start your whole opera-listening weekend by tuning in to the FREE live audio-stream tomorrow evening at 7:25 pm for a performance of Beethoven's "Fidelio."

Enjoy!

DAVE
