GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET

MET OPERA HD DOUBLE-BILL

Tchaikovsky's
Iolanta
and
BLUEBEARD'S
CASTLE
On the heels of her triumphant Met performances as Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by a psychological thriller (Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Maestro Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.

Host: Eric Owens
Intermission Content will include:
• Live backstage interview with star soprano Anna Netrebko about singing the title role in the Met’s premiere performances of Iolanta.
• Met General Manager Peter Gelb leads a discussion between acclaimed Polish film and opera director Mariusz Trelinski and the stars of Bluebeard’s Castle.
• A preview of the next transmission in the series, La Donna del Lago on March 14, including an interview with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and tenor Juan Diego Flórez.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

In the next few days, opera fans can choose to listen to a number of popular operas (such as "Aida" & "Rigoletto"), as well as some fairly obscure items (anyone up for Zelenski's "Goplana?").

The "Aida" broadcast happens to be a FREE live audio-stream from the Met, scheduled for this Saturday (November 5) at 11:55 a.m.

"Rigoletto" comes to us on Tuesday (November 8) in a LIVE broadcast on Radio 3 (RAI) from Bologna.

Even more Verdi is on tap, with an actual rarity by this famous composer: His 1845 opera "Alzira" can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands) on Saturday with an archival performance that took place in Amsterdam in 1980, featuring Dutch soprano Cristina Deutekom in the title role. Ms Deutekom never really "made it big" the way Joan Sutherland and Montserrat Caballe did, but her performances at the Met in Verdi's "Vespri Siciliani" (for example) & her recordings of Verdi's "Lombardi" & "Attila" will always be treasured by her many admirers.

From this past summer's Glimmerglass Opera Festival in Cooperstown, NY, you can listen to NPR for a performance of Rossini's "La Gazza Ladra" ("The Thieving Magpie"). Aside from its fairly popular overture, there's plenty of engaging Rossini music to be enjoyed in this nearly 3-hour-long opera.

Have you ever felt the urge to listen to an opera in which the heroine "dies" a total of three times (!!!) -- in a manner of speaking, that is? Well, Lyric Opera - FM has it on tap for this Sunday in a LIVE performance from this year's Wexford Festival. It's Donizetti's "Maria de' Rudenz" (premiered in 1838). Presumed dead in Act 1 after having been abandoned in the catacombs by the villainous baritone, Maria turns up later in the act to sing a double aria, and then to disrupt the engagement party between the baritone and "The Other Woman." Then in Act 2, the enraged baritone stabs her, with the shocked onlookers exclaiming "E spenta!" ("She's dead!") -- But not yet! -- because, between acts, she's managed to bandage up her wounds and survives long enough to stab "The Other Woman" who (unlike Maria) promptly dies! Then at the very end of the opera, she tears off her bandages and (finally) dies, but not before proclaiming her undying love for the baritone! (WHY???) Well, in the world of opera, anything is possible, I suppose. And the music? Prime Donizetti!

Unfortunately, "Maria de' Rudenz" competes this Sunday with another opera that can be considered prime Donizetti: His opera "La Favorite" is being given a FREE live video-stream as it's being performed in Munich with an all-star cast which includes mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca and tenor Matthew Polenzani, as well as baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, all 3 of whom recently appeared in that wonderful HD-transmission from the Met of this same composer's "Roberto Devereux."

The other LIVE video-stream which may be of interest, especially to those who enjoy exploring works that are unknown to most of us, is tomorrow's Opera Platform offering: Zelenski's 1897 opera "Goplana" as performed at the Polish National Opera. Operas shown on this website are usually provided with English subtitles (we hope, especially in this instance) and are available for viewing for several months following the initial showing.

Enjoy!

DAVE

The Met Saturday afternoon
radio broadcast will return on December 3 with 'Manon Lescaut.'
