Cavalleria Rusticana-Pagliacci
Tenor Marcelo Álvarez stars in Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" and Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci." In "Cavalleria," he's a former soldier who used another woman to make his ex-fiancée, now married to another man, jealous; and in "Pagliacci," he's a clown whose wife is in love with another man.

This coming Saturday (November 19), Radio 4 (the Netherlands) will be broadcasting, direct from Amsterdam, tomorrow night's performance of Handel's "Jephtha" (1751). Strictly speaking, the work is considered an oratorio rather than a full-fledged opera, but the Netherlands Opera is performing it as an opera. It's interesting to note that this was Handel's last oratorio, written when he was dealing with oncoming blindness.
NPR, on the other hand, brings us all the way forward to the present time with a broadcast (from April 2016) of Daniel Schnyder's new opera "Charlie Parker's Yardbird." As performed in Philadelphia, this work features tenor Lawrence Brownlee as saxophonist Charlie Parker, indicating that prospective listeners should probably expect to hear a clear jazz influence in this world premiere piece of music.
Other items of interest include 3 re-broadcasts, two of which stem from this past summer's Bayreuth Festival. On BBC Radio 3, one can listen to Wagner's "Parsifal" while German Radio will be featuring a broadcast of the July 27thperformance of "Die Walkure."
On the other hand, ORF (Austria) is giving interested listeners another chance to hear Saverio Mercadante's "Francesca da Rimini" as performed on July 30 this past summer in Martina Franca. This opera, written in 1831, actually received its world premiere at this summer's festival, never having been performed anywhere else, even during Mercadante's lifetime (as far as we know).
Enjoy!
