OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

A big weekend coming up for Wagner enthusiasts! To be sure, many will be driving to local movie theatres for the LIVE HD-transmission this Saturday(October 8) of "Tristan & Isolde" as performed at the Met and featuring Stuart Skelton and Nina Stemme as the doomed lovers.

At the same time, there will be a LIVE (free) video-stream from the Bavarian State Opera (Munich) of "Die Meistersinger." Fans of tenor Jonas Kaufmann need to know that he will not be performing this Saturday but is being replaced by Robert Kunzli.

Another free opera video can be accessed on Friday (October 7) on The Opera Platform, the opera in this case being a March 2015 performance from Lyons of Franz Schreker's "Die Gezeichneten" ("The Stigmatized"), which had its premiere in 1915. It may be of interest to some opera fans to know that, in the first 3 decades of the 20th century, Schreker's operas actually competed in popularity with those of Richard Strauss.

A couple of other lesser-known works are also among those which can be enjoyed this weekend. On German Radio, for example, there's Cherubini's comic opera "Les Deux Journees" (1800) in a LIVE performance from Bonn.

Then on Sunday (October 9), an obscure opera by Camille Saint-Saens -- his 1887 4-act opera "Proserpine" -- can be heard on BR-Klassik.

On far more familiar ground, how about Bizet's "Carmen" in a May 2016 performance from the San Francisco Opera? That's on NPR.

And ORF (Austria) brings us the July 6, 2016 performance from London's Royal Opera House of Massenet's "Werther" with Vittorio Grigolo and Joyce DiDonato as the doomed lovers (lots of "doomed lovers" in the world of opera, in case you haven't noticed).

Enjoy!
