GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET

 MACBETH

Star soprano Anna Netrebko delivers her searing portrayal of Lady Macbeth, the mad and murderous mate of Zeljko Lucic's doomed Macbeth, for the first time at the Met. Adrian Noble's chilling production of Verdi's masterful adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy also stars Joseph Calleja as the noble Macduff and Rene Pape as Banquo. Fabio Luisi conducts.

The Transgender Opera Singer:
from Mezzo to Tenor

September 16, 2016 by theoperastage
Exclusive Guest Blog post for The Opera Stage by tenor Holden Madagame.

I’m an FTM (female to male) transgender classical singer. You have probably not met one of me before. I’ve been on testosterone about two years, use he/him/his pronouns, have had top-surgery (a double mastectomy), and have still continued to sing.

Nina Simone plays a stunning Bach-style fugue in the middle of one of her classic songs

Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has cancelled several upcoming commitments due to additional, needed chemo.  (One year ago, he was treated for a brain tumor.) Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and hearts.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Tenor Stuart Skelton, as many of you probably already know, sang in the opening night performance at the Met of Wagner's "Tristan & Isolde" this pastMonday evening, and will also appear as Tristan in next month's LIVE HD-transmission. In case you may want to hear him sing this role in a different production and with a different supporting cast, you can tune in to BBC Radio 3on Saturday for a broadcast of this opera from English National Opera (July 2016).   (www.bbc.co.uk/radio3)

Also from this past July, there's a performance from Madrid of Bellini's "I Puritani" on ORF (Austria). This one features soprano Diana Damrau as Elvira. FYI, if you prefer, I've included a link below to a YouTube video of this same performance in the event that you wish to watch it as well.
(audio only: http://oe1.orf.at/)

Fans of the music of John Adams can listen to a LIVE performance of his 1986 opera "Nixon in China" which is being broadcast on Swedish Radio. The performance itself comes to us from Stockholm.

Another 20th century opera -- Francis Poulenc's "Dialogues of the Carmelites" -- is on NPR's schedule. It's a performance from the San Francisco Opera, NOT from the 2015/2016 season, but an archival broadcast from 1982. Of particular interest would be a chance to hear soprano Leontyne Price as Madame Lidoine, plus Regine Crespin as Madame de Croissy.

The next FREE live audio-stream from the Met will take place on Tuesday(October 4) at 7:25 pm. The opera: Rossini's "L'Italiana in Algeri" with bass Ildar Abdrazakov in the comic role of Mustafa.

Enjoy!
DAVE

The Met Saturday afternoon
radio broadcast will return in December.
