A Recipe for Success on the Opera Stage

Julia Child once said that the key to successful cooking is buying the right ingredients; likewise in opera, the key to a great performance starts with a great cast.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Opera lovers can start their unofficial opera weekend on Friday (August 19) by accessing RAI Radio 3 for a BBC Proms performance of Janacek's "Makropulos Case." Soprano Karita Mattila will be singing the role of Emilia Marty, and if you happen to be a Mattila fan (or a Janacek fan, for that matter), you know that this singer has in recent years triumphed in the leading soprano roles of Katya Kabanova and Jenufa, & has even sung the role of Janacek's homicidal foster-mother (Kostelnicka).

Then on Saturday (August 20), a rare double-bill turns up on Swedish Radio's schedule as two eighteenth-century Italian operas get paired up, those two being Giovanni Paisiello's "Nina" (1789) & Pietro Morandi's "Comala" (1780). These two operas were performed this summer in Vadstena, & it is the August 10th performance that is to be broadcast on Saturday.

An Italian opera of more recent vintage comes to us on NPR with the San Francisco Opera's production of Verdi's "Luisa Miller." This one originally was performed last season in September 2015.

And in case you missed it not so long ago, Halevy's "La Juive" can be heard on ORF. This is the recent Munich production that featured Roberto Alagna as Eleazar and, as I can personally attest, was a definite must-hear performance!

Enjoy!
