OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

NPR begins its series of broadcasts of operas that were performed this past season at the Los Angeles Opera with a taped performance from last September of Verdi's "La Traviata." Versatile tenor/baritone Placido Domingo takes on the role of the elder Germont in this particular production.

German Radio has a rarity on hand for this coming Saturday: "La Purpura de la Rosa" ("The Blood of the Rose"), a 1701 opera by Tomas Velasco. The performance being broadcast is one that took place in Potsdam on June 23 of this year.

Moving into opera from the 20th century, there are 2 offerings worth noting, one of which is Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" which was performed in Bologna on December 4, 2014, coming to us via Radio 3 (RAI).

The other 20th century work is Janacek's "The Makropulos Case" which can be heard on Swedish Radio in a performance from Brno (November 21, 2014).

If you happen to be a Mozart enthusiast, you're "in business" since there are 2 of his operas coming up in the days ahead. On Saturday, there's a broadcast from Munich (May 3, 2015) to be heard on ORF (Austria), the work in question being "La Finta Semplice" ("The Feigned Simpleton") which Mozart wrote when he was all of 12 years old (!!!).

Then, on Sunday, Glyndebourne Opera is offering a FREE live video-stream of "The Abduction from the Seraglio." (Later this summer: videos of Britten's "The Rape of Lucretia" & Donizetti's "Poliuto").

Enjoy!
