La Rondine

US: June 25, 2014, 7 pm (local time)

Puccini’s achingly beautiful score charmingly conveys the plight of Magda (the “swallow” of the title), who unexpectedly finds true love with the handsome young Ruggero. But their idyllic life comes to a premature end as she is haunted by the fear that her checkered past will ruin his future. Opera stars (and former true-life spouses) Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna portray Puccini’s star-crossed lovers. Nicholas Joël’s production features elegant and sophisticated art-deco sets that contribute to the dazzling stage picture.
Original transmission: Saturday, January 10, 2009
 Approximate runtime: 2 hours

Celebrate
Opera Lovers of RI's Fourth Anniversary with us!

Noon,
Saturday, June 28, 2014

June 25, 2010, I published my first blog entry. It has been great fun and a tremendous learning experience for me; truly a labor of love. I hope it has been fruitful for you as well. In celebration of this anniversary, four years without missing a single week, I am inviting you to join us for a "Dutch treat" lunch at Gourmet House on Hope St. The prices are very reasonable and has a sizable menu that includes Chinese and Thai selections. You can check the menu online.

(I wish I could offer to give a free banquet but I don't make any money from the blog and my day job can't subsidize it.)

Come and meet other local opera lovers.

Please send me an RSVP:

RSVP to me: drpegueros@gmail.com

(We had to change the location because Asian Palace closed down unexpectedly. We do not know if the shutdown is permanent.)
Directions to Gourmet House: (half a block south of the Hope St. CVS)

WATCH PLÁCIDO DOMINGO LIVE FROM CHILE ON JULY 7

Placido Domingo and Veronica Villarroel

Placido Domingo continues to be a world ambassador for opera having recently conducted a concert in London and a recently announced concert in Madrid on June 25. But before he sings at the World Cup (and returns to LA Opera for La Traviata this fall) he's making a stop in Chile to sing with Verónica Villarroel (Florencia in Florencia en el Amazonas) on July 7 @ 1900hrs. The event will be streaming live on www.municipal.cl.  Save the date and mark your calendar! (Chile is in the same time zone as the Eastern U.S., so 7pm))

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Some of the highlights for this coming Saturday (June 28) on internet radio include the broadcast on NPR of Dvorak's "Rusalka" which was performed this past February in Chicago, as NPR continues with its series of broadcasts from the 2013/2014 season at Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Also on Saturday's schedule is a relatively rare opportunity to hear one of the lesser-known operas of Richard Strauss: namely, "Daphne" in a performance from Toulouse which took place earlier this month (June 15). This one will be broadcast on French Radio.

In a lighter vein, what is probably Franz Lehar's most popular work -- "The Merry Widow" -- will be receiving a LIVE broadcast from Turin (Italy). You can catch this one on RAI.

Then on Monday, June 30, BBC's Radio 3 will be broadcasting a performance from English National Opera of Berlioz's "Benvenuto Cellini." Currently being performed this month at ENO, the opera showcases the voice of tenor Michael Spyres in the lead role. Not having sung at the Met, Spyres has been making a name for himself all over Europe in recent years. Worth checking out, IMO.

Enjoy!
