June 25, 2010, I published my first blog entry. It has been great fun and a tremendous learning experience for me; truly a labor of love. I hope it has been fruitful for you as well. In celebration of this anniversary, four years without missing a single week, I am inviting you to join us for a "Dutch treat" lunch at Gourmet House on Hope St. The prices are very reasonable and has a sizable menu that includes Chinese and Thai selections. You can check the menu online.

(I wish I could offer to give a free banquet but I don't make any money from the blog and my day job can't subsidize it.)

Come and meet other local opera lovers.

Please send me an RSVP:

RSVP to me: drpegueros@gmail.com

(We had to change the location because Asian Palace closed down unexpectedly. We do not know if the shutdown is permanent.)
Directions to Gourmet House: (half a block south of the Hope St. CVS)

OPERA ON THE INTERNET

DAVE  D' AGUANNO

The series of broadcasts of lyric opera of Chicago's 2013/2014 opera season continues on Saturday (June 14) with a performance of one of the most popular operettas of them all:  Johann Strauss's "Die Fledermaus."

Please note: a video trailer of Chicago's "Die Fledermaus" can be seen here: http://www.lyricopera.org/fledermaus/

The recent production of Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann" from the Vienna State Opera appears on the schedule of the Belgian radio station Klara. Having watched the video of this production that was given a live stream on June 1, I can personally vouch for the excellent singing of all involved.

A live performance of Claudio Monteverdi's 1643 opera "The Coronation of Poppea" can be heard on radio 4 (the Netherlands).

There are also a couple of 21st century operas on tap this Saturday, one of which happens to be the world premiere of Marko Nikodjevic's first opera "Vivier" -- based on the life, works, and death of Canadian composer Claude Vivier who lived from 1948 to March 7, 1983, when he was murdered (!!!) in a barroom incident. This one was performed in Munich on May 7 of this year.

The other 21st century work is the opera "Bluthaus" which was written by Georg Friedrich Haas in 2010/2011. It is his 2014 revision which can be heard this Saturday in a performance from Vienna which took place this past May 21.

Enjoy!

PLÁCIDO DOMINGO OPENS THE 2014/15 L.A. OPERA SEASON WITH   LA TRAVIATA

Placido Domingo

This fall, following the incredible success of Thaïs, General Director Plácido Domingo and soprano Nino Machaidze return to the LA Opera stage in Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata to open our 2014/15 Season. Conducted by Music Director James Conlon, this classic Verdi masterpiece stars Mr. Domingo as Giorgio Germont, tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz as his son, Alfredo Germont, and the stunning Ms. Machaidze in her role debut as Violetta.

In the opulent world of Paris - updated in director Marta Domingo’s staging to the Roaring Twenties - a naive young man falls head over heels for a glamorous party girl. Together they trade the fast life for an idyllic love nest far from the city…until an unexpected visitor threatens to tear them apart. The powerful romantic drama, illuminated through Verdi’s soaring arias and passionate duets, have long made La Traviata one of the most popular of all operas.

La Traviata opens Saturday, September 13, for six performances only. Individual tickets go on sale to the general public on June 22, but are available in full and mini subscription packages now.

Synopsis:
A tiny Serbian village explodes with brass cacophony and riotous celebration as more than half a million music fans descend upon Guča, the world’s largest trumpet competition.
