Rigoletto

Rigoletto

US: June 18, 2014, 7 pm (local time)

Michael Mayer’s acclaimed production, the talk of the opera world when it premiered in 2013, sets the action of Verdi’s masterpiece in 1960 Las Vegas—a neon-lit world ruled by money and ruthless, powerful men. In this bold new vision (featured on 60 Minutes), Piotr Beczala is the Duke, a popular entertainer and casino owner. Željko Lučić sings Rigoletto, a comedian and the Duke’s sidekick, and Diana Damrau is Rigoletto’s innocent daughter, Gilda. When she is seduced by the Duke, Rigoletto sets out on a tragic course of murderous revenge.

Original transmission: Saturday, February 16, 2013
Approximate runtime: 2 hours, 30 minutes
Next Wednesday, June 25 at 7pm at a theater near you

La Rondine

US: June 25, 2014, 7 pm (local time)

Puccini’s achingly beautiful score charmingly conveys the plight of Magda (the “swallow” of the title), who unexpectedly finds true love with the handsome young Ruggero. But their idyllic life comes to a premature end as she is haunted by the fear that her checkered past will ruin his future. Opera stars (and former true-life spouses) Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna portray Puccini’s star-crossed lovers. Nicholas Joël’s production features elegant and sophisticated art-deco sets that contribute to the dazzling stage picture.
Original transmission: Saturday, January 10, 2009
 Approximate runtime: 2 hours

June 25, 2010, I published my first blog entry. It has been great fun and a tremendous learning experience for me; truly a labor of love. I hope it has been fruitful for you as well. In celebration of this anniversary, four years without missing a single week, I am inviting you to join us for a "Dutch treat" lunch at Gourmet House on Hope St. The prices are very reasonable and has a sizable menu that includes Chinese and Thai selections. You can check the menu online.

(I wish I could offer to give a free banquet but I don't make any money from the blog and my day job can't subsidize it.)

Come and meet other local opera lovers.

Please send me an RSVP:

RSVP to me: drpegueros@gmail.com

(We had to change the location because Asian Palace closed down unexpectedly. We do not know if the shutdown is permanent.)

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

A performance from February 2014 of Rossini's ever-popular "Barber of Seville" will be of primary interest this weekend for most listeners. As in past weeks, this broadcast comes to us on NPR as part of their series devoted to the operas from the 2013/2014 season of Lyric Opera of Chicago. If the names of mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard (Rosina) and tenor Alek Shrader (Count Almaviva) sound vaguely familiar, some of you may remember them as the young lovers Miranda & Ferdinand in "The Tempest" by Thomas Ades, which received an HD-transmission from the Met a couple of seasons ago.
If you prefer your Rossini operas to be serious rather than comic, you may want to tune in to the Belgian station Klara for a performance from last month of his slightly earlier opera "Tancredi" (1813). The performance being broadcast comes to us from Paris.
ORF, on the other hand, is featuring a LIVE performance from the Vienna State Opera of Janacek's "The Cunning Little Vixen." This, of course, is an audio-only broadcast, but avid fans of this particular opera may want to consider signing up for the LIVE video-stream of this same work (for a fee, that is), which will be taking place at the end of the month (on Monday, June 30).
Next, I'd like to call your attention to a broadcast that is a bit of an oddity, although the music will be familiar to many opera-goers: German Radio has scheduled what they call "The Ring in 100 Minutes" which is, in effect, all 4 operas of Wagner's Ring Cycle, condensed to a single 100-minute span. This particular performance took place on April 4, 2014 in Berlin, and might be worth checking out, especially for listeners who enjoy the Ring cycle but are not always either willing or able to commit themselves to all 4 operas, performed in their entirety.
Another oddity (for most folks, I believe) turns up on BBC Radio 3's schedule for this Saturday. With soprano Sarah Tynan in the role of Manon, tenor Jason Bridges as Des Grieux, and baritone Benjamin Bevan as Lescaut, one might easily imagine that the opera being performed is either Massenet's "Manon" or Puccini's "Manon Lescaut." Fanatical opera-lovers (such as Yours Truly) might even guess at Auber's "Manon Lescaut" which was written before the other 2 far more popular works. In all three cases, however, one would be wrong. Instead of a work by either Massenet, Puccini, or Auber, it's "Boulevard Solitude" by the recently deceased contemporary German composer Hans Werner Henze -- And yes, it's basically the same story used by those other composers. Just don't expect it to sound anything like Massenet or Puccini, though. (Incidentally, the broadcast is of a performance from February 2014 by the Welsh National Opera.)
Enjoy!

Puccini’s musical vision of the American West is vividly brought to life in the Met’s atmospheric production. Marcello Giordani sings Dick Johnson, the bandit-turned-lover hunted by the cynical sheriff Jack Rance (Lucio Gallo), who wants Minnie for himself. Complete with whiskey-drinking cowboys, gunplay, a poker game, and a snowstorm, La Fanciulla del West is Puccini at his most colorful.
