OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Weather permitting, many of us will probably be driving to area movie theatres this coming Saturday afternoon (February 8) for the Met's LIVE HD-transmission of Dvorak's "Rusalka" with Renee Fleming in the title role. Opera-goers who may be familiar with the plot of "The Little Mermaid" will find some strong similarities in Dvorak's enchanting opera (which can also be HEARD on several internet radio stations).

As a preview of the upcoming March 1st HD-transmission of Borodin's "Prince Igor", the Met is offering a LIVE (& free) audio transmission of the work tomorrow evening, beginning at 6:55. Bass-baritone Ildar Abdrazakov is scheduled to take on the title role. Those opera fans who may have seen the HD-transmission of Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" back in October 2011 will remember him as the notorious Henry VIII in that opera.

Fans of the works of Jules Massenet have reason to rejoice this weekend, as 3 of his operas will be "hitting the airwaves." On the Belgian station Klara, you can tune in to the recent (January 2014) performance from Barcelona of "Cendrillon" -- Massenet's own version of the Cinderella story -- with Joyce Di Donato singing the title role. Somewhat coincidentally, she will also be performing this same character, only in the Rossini opera ("Cenerentola"), when the Met offers its LIVE HD-transmission of the Rossini work later this season.

The other 2 Massenet operas scheduled for this Saturday happen to be one-act operas as a double-bill: "La Navarraise" and "Therese" as performed this past November in Wexford. (Technically, "Therese" is written as 2 acts, but since the whole work takes little more than a single hour to perform, it is usually presented without a break between the 2 acts.)

Of more recent vintage, American composer Dominick Argento's 1976 opera "The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe" can be heard on German radio in a performance that took place in Branschweig on November 30 of last year. Listeners who cringe at the thought of listening to "modern" opera may rest assured that Argento's opera is basically a conservative piece, considering its date of composition.

Of even more recent vintage, the Malmo opera is presenting a January 4, 2014 performance of "Tusen och en Natt" ("1,001 Nights") by the contemporary Swedish composer Daniel Fjellstrom. Billed as a "family opera in one act", this one might be worth checking out.

And what opera weekend would be complete without a performance of Puccini's "La Boheme" ?? Check it out on French Radio when a performance from Lyric Opera of Chicago is aired, with a stunning cast: Anna Netrebko & Joseph Calleja !!
