OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This coming Saturday (February 15), the Met will not be broadcasting LIVE; instead, the November 7, 1913 performance of "Die Frau ohne Schatten" (Richard Strauss) will be broadcast. Critics were virtually unanimous in their praise of the quality of the recent Met performances of this work, so Richard Strauss fans: take notice!

Also from the Met: Tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 7:25, you can tune in to a work by another Strauss, as the ever-popular "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss, Jr. can be heard in a LIVE audio-stream, offered at no cost at the website listed below.

Then, on Tuesday (February 18) at 7:55 pm, it's the season premiere from the Met of Massenet's "Werther" with the same cast that is scheduled to be performing in this work when the Met presents it in HD at local movie theatres on March 15.

Other works to be heard on internet radio include a number of rarities, among them being an opera written by Donizetti's teacher (Mayr), as his 1801 opera "Ginevra di Scozia" is broadcast on ORF, the performance having taken place on June 14 of last year.

Lovers of 20th century opera will probably be delighted to know that Weinberg's 1985 opera "Der Idiot" (based on Dostoyevsky's novel "The Idiot") is being aired on German Radio in a performance from earlier this year, specifically 1/12/14, in Mannheim.

Also from the 20th century, British composer Mark Anthony Turnage's 1st opera -- "Greek" -- turns up on BBC Radio 3. This 1988 piece is actually a re-working of the Oedipus tale most people know from the Sophocles drama.

Enjoy!
