Guiseppi Verdi’s
Un Ballo in Maschera —New Production
U.S. Encore: Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 6:30 pm local time
Sondra Radvanovsky, Marcelo Álvarez, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky lead an “excellent cast who bring all the emotion, tenderness, and tension to a score that is both exciting and haunting.” (Huffington Post)
As the conflicted king, Marcelo Álvarez delivers one
of his most dramatically charged and refined performances at the Met, [singing]
with subtlety, shadings and soaring lyricism. Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s “trademark
dark sound and supple phrasing… poignantly brought to life” the pain of the
betrayed Count Anckarström. (New York Times)
Sondra Radvanovsky “was a special triumph, her
powerful, penetrating voice filling the house with refulgent sound” in the role
of Amelia. (AP)
Alden’s production is an “intriguing fresh look at one
of the essential works of the repertory.” (Associated Press)

CAPRICCIO
Saturday, December 8 - 8:00pm; Sunday, December 9 - 3:00am; Monday, December 10 - 12:00am
On opening night of the 2008-09 Met season, Renee Fleming dazzled audiences when she sang the final scene of Strauss's wise and worldly meditation on art and life. Now she performs the entire work, in which the composer explores the essence of opera itself. Joseph Kaiser and Sarah Connolly also star with Andrew Davis conducting.

Elīna Garanča
Elīna Garanča will be signing copies of her new CD,
Romantique,
at the Met Bookstore this Friday, December 7, at 5 pm.
Garanča burned up the stage when she portrayed Carmen at the Met. This season, she plays a very different impassioned lover in the "pants role" of Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito.

The Met’s holiday
tree Lighting
The Met’s holiday tree on the Grand Tier
balcony will be lit on Thursday, December 6, at 5:00 pm, with a ceremony
featuring musical performances by the Met Opera Brass and Met stars, sing-along
caroling, and refreshments.
As part of the Met’s new tradition of annual
holiday presentations for families, Bartlett Sher's hit production of Rossini’s
The Barber of Seville returns this December in an abridged English-language
version. This classic comedy features a charming young cast, including Isabel
Leonard as the lovely Rosina, Alek Shrader as the Count who woos her, and Rodio
Pogossov as the conspiring barber. The
Barber of Seville opens on December 18, with 11am matinees and evening
performances running through January 5. Tickets start at just $30.
To learn more, visit our The Barber of Seville
minisite, and enter our "A Flat Figaro" contest by December 16.
Welcome the New Year with the gala premiere of
David McVicar’s production of Maria Stuarda, starring Joyce DiDonato as Mary,
Queen of Scots, on December 31. The performance will be followed by dinner,
dancing, and fireworks—making the Met an ideal place to ring in 2013.
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Not a huge number of operas this Saturday (Dec. 8) on
internet radio, as most stations will be carrying the first of the live
broadcasts from the Met this season. And of course, this one coming up is also
going to be shown in local movie theatres: Verdi's "Un Ballo in
Maschera" with some of our favorites from past HD-transmissions, such as
Sondra Radvanovsky ("Trovatore"), Marcelo Alvarez
("Trovatore" & "Tosca"), Dimitri Hvorostovsky
("Trovatore" & "Ernani"), & Stephanie Blythe
("Rheingold" & "Walkure").
Radio 4 (the Netherlands) is not letting the opening
night of the new season at La Scala get by us. Opening night being Dec. 8
(Friday), the broadcast will be delayed until Saturday, when the opera to be heard
will be Wagner's "Lohengrin" with tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the lead.
Kaufmann, as many of you may remember, also appeared in Met HD-transmissions of
Wagner's "Die Walkure" and Gounod's "Faust."
In the mood for some 20th century opera? Well, German
Radio has one that may be of interest. It's Denisov's 1981 opera "L'Ecume
des Jours" ("The Foam of Days"), to be heard in a performance
from Stuttgart that took place last Saturday (Dec. 1).

Nothing on the Met's FREE live audio-stream this week,
although there's "Les Troyens" (Berlioz) to look forward to, a week
from tomorrow.
Enjoy!
