OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

A mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar, as well as the old and the new coming up on this Saturday's internet opera schedule.

You can't get any newer than the recent world premiere in Berlin of Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth's "American Lulu" (to be heard on German radio). This new opera is, as expected, based on Alban Berg's 20th century work -- or at least, the first 2 acts of it are. Then Neuwirth goes her own way in Act 3, transplanting the characters of Lulu, the Countess Geschwitz, & Schigolch into the 60s & 70s as African-Americans. Well! Not only is it new, but it's different as well. The performance being broadcast took place this past Sunday.

On more traditional territory, NPR is bringing us Mozart's comic masterpiece "The Marriage of Figaro" as heard as part of last season's San Francisco Opera schedule.

More Mozart comes to us via Canada's CBC Radio 2. In this case, rather than an actual live broadcast, it's a live recording of "Don Giovanni" that's being aired this Saturday. Some familiar names in the cast are Diana Damrau as Donna Anna & Joyce Di Donato as Donna Elvira.

Even more Mozart is heading our way this weekend, as the Royal Swedish Opera (Stockholm) gives a LIVE performance of "The Magic Flute" (to be heard on Swedish radio).

In the mood for a light Rossini comedy? If so, then you might wish to tune in to the Belgian station Klara, as the opera "Il Signor Bruschino" will be broadcast in a performance that took place on August 12 as part of this past summer's Rossini Festival in Pesaro (Italy).

Since the Met's 2012/2013 season has just started, their free LIVE stream has now kicked in, and tonight (Oct. 3) at 7:25, Puccini's "Turandot" is scheduled to be broadcast. Then on next Tuesday (Oct. 9), again at 7:25, it's Verdi's "Otello" with soprano Renee Fleming singing the role of Desdemona. You could consider that one an audio preview of the upcoming HD-transmission of the opera which will take place later this month, on the 27th.

Enjoy!

I then realized that I could never be satisfied again with the mere natural charm of my voice, that I had to constantly paint when singing, melting all the colors, expressing reds and blacks that had to be less primary but bursting with subtly colored combinations.

November 3–4, 2012: Duruflé’s Requiem
Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs

Like Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé left the terrifying “Dies Irae” movement out of his 1947 Requiem. It is a requiem that tends toward contemplation and consolation. Other works include Daniel Pinkham’s Wedding Cantata, and Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, a setting of five poems by his wife, Hila Plitmann.

Gustav Mahler
May 4, 2013: Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 2
Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection Symphony,” was, with the Eighth Symphony, among Mahler’s
most popular and successful works during his lifetime. He was struck by a text he heard at the
funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow: “Auferstehen, ja auferstehen wirst du, mein Staub,
nach kurzer Ruhe!” (“You shall arise, my dust, yes you shall arise after a brief rest!”) The
Singers will perform as guest artists with the Rhode Island Philharmonic.

At the NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY:

Stephen Lord, Artistic Advisor of NEC's opera studies program, conducts Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice in Jordan Hall. Based on the myth of Orpheus, set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi this production features the NEC Philharmonia and a student cast led by singers in the Artist Diploma program, stage directed by Opera Studies Chair Joshua Major.
Orfeo Jaime Korkos
Euridice Hae Ji Chang
Cupid Soyoung Park
The opera follows Orpheus, granted permission by Cupid, into the Underworld to retrieve his beloved Euridice. Though originally set to an Italian libretto, Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice owes much to the genre of French opera, especially its use of recitative or the rhythms of ordinary speech. Orfeo marks a shift away from the baroque style ofOpera Seria toward a new style that focuses on the story at hand instead of elaborate staging.
Jaime KorkosMezzo-soprano Jaime Korkos '11 G.D., '13 A.D. (Orfeo) is a student of Luretta Bybee. During her previous studies at NEC, Korkos sang the role of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni (in photo) and the title role of La Périchole, as well as the solo part in Mahler's Symphony No. 3. Immediately before returning to NEC for the Artist Diploma, she participated in the Gerdine Young Artist Program at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, which allowed her to perform in four operas in a two-month span.
Hae Ji ChangSoprano Hae Ji Chang '12 A.D. (Euridice) studies withLorraine Nubar. At NEC, she has previous sung Pamina in The Magic Flute (in photo). During the 2011–12 season, Chang covered Giannetta from L'elisir d'Amore at New York City Opera in March and Mélisande from Pelléas et Mélisande at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in June. She was cast as Giulietta in Opera Boston's 2012 production of Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montechhi—a production that unfortunately never took place, due to the closing of Opera Boston at the end of 2011. Chang is enrolled as of fall 2012 in the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program at Los Angeles Opera, and returns to NEC for tonight's performance.
Soyoung ParkSoprano Soyoung Park '12 M.M., '14 A.D. (Cupid) studies with Lorraine Nubar. At Aspen in 2012, when she reprised her showcase role from NEC's 2011 production of Mozart's The Magic Flute, Park "delivered a relentless, forceful and blazingly sung Queen of the Night," according to MusicWeb's eyewitness. Park has also appeared at NEC in the 2012 Boston premiere of Benjamin Britten'sPaul Bunyan.
CI40Come back tomorrow night
for vocal music in a
completely different vein.
