The anticipated return of the recuperating James Levine affects many people inside the Metropolitan Opera. But the most interested, you might think, is his frequent substitute, the Italian conductor Fabio Luisi...

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Not going to see the HD-transmission this Saturday of the Met's current production of Verdi's "Otello" with Renee Fleming as Desdemona? No worries, as there's plenty of terrific opera to be heard on internet radio this weekend.

For starters, BBC Radio 3 has a wonderful, though virtually unknown opera by Donizetti scheduled for broadcast. It's "Caterina Cornaro" (written towards the end of his career) which, believe it or not, would have become instantly popular at its premiere back in the 1840s except that Franz Lachner's opera by the same name completely overshadowed it at that time. At any rate, the broadcast of this opera on tap will soon be released on CD, in case you do wish to hear it but won't be around to listen to the radio broadcast.

ORF is airing a performance from last summer (7/23/12) of Glinka's "A Life for the Czar" which was part of this year's festival in Montpellier (France).

Then there's some Verdi on the schedule (of course!) as French Radio brings us a LIVE performance from Lyons of his opera "Macbeth."

Venturing into 21st century opera, you might want to give George Benjamin's "Written on Skin" a try. It's on Radio 4 (the Netherlands) & was heard in Amsterdam on October 11. Incidentally, the opera itself premiered this past summer to some impressive critical acclaim. IMO, it's one of the best of the modern operas written this century (so far).

On NPR, an October 2011 performance of Rossini's ever-popular "The Barber of Seville" will be broadcast, as part of their cycle of broadcasts of operas performed last season at the Houston Grand Opera.

Figaro (a.k.a. the Barber of Seville) makes a re-appearance next Monday (Oct. 29) when the Met's free LIVE audio-stream treats us to Mozart's comic masterpiece "The Marriage of Figaro."

 Enjoy!

Ah-ha-VAH
November 3–4, 2012: Duruflé’s Requiem
Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs

Like Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé left the terrifying “Dies Irae” movement out of his 1947 Requiem. It is a requiem that tends toward contemplation and consolation. Other works include Daniel Pinkham’s Wedding Cantata, and Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, a setting of five poems by his wife, Hila Plitmann.
7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, St. Mary’s Church, Bristol

Handel
December 8, 2012: George Frideric Handel’s Messiah
Two and a half centuries after its first performance, Handel’sMessiah easily remains the most frequently performed, most beloved work in the choral canon. The Providence Singers and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra join forces for a December performance at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Betsy Burleigh conducts.
7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, The Vets, Providence

February 10, 2013: Franz Joseph Haydn’s Creation

(Also performed Saturday, Feb. 9, in New Bedford. More at New Bedford Symphony)

Crown
April 6-7, 2013: Fit for a Queen
Music was everywhere at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953: selections from England’s glorious musical past (Handel’s Zadok the Priest has been part of every coronation since George II in 1727)
and new works by Herbert Howells, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Healy Willan and others. The Singers
will perform music written for Queen Elizabeth at her coronation and during the six decades since, including new music from the recently published Choirbook for the Queen.

Gustav Mahler
May 4, 2013: Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 2
Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection Symphony,” was, with the Eighth Symphony, among Mahler’s
most popular and successful works during his lifetime. He was struck by a text he heard at the
funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow: “Auferstehen, ja auferstehen wirst du, mein Staub,
nach kurzer Ruhe!” (“You shall arise, my dust, yes you shall arise after a brief rest!”) The
Singers will perform as guest artists with the Rhode Island Philharmonic.

8 p.m. Saturday, May 4 The Vets, Providence
