Maestro
James Levine
to Return!

out of the past

Well, you can provisionally knock La Cieca over with a
feather. “James Levine, the Metropolitan Opera’s Music
Director, will return to conducting on May 19, 2013 with
the Met Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. He will then lead three
operas in the Met’s 2013-14 season, including a new
production of Verdi’s Falstaff and revivals of Mozart’s Così
fan tutte and Berg’s Wozzeck.” The press release from the
Met, sent at the peculiar hour of 7:30 pm, continues…

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

There are some interesting items to look forward to this coming Saturday (Oct. 13) on internet radio, surely enough to please almost everyone, with the possible exception of those listeners who absolutely must hear yet another performance of "Carmen" or "La Boheme" every single week. FWIW, however, those two operas may actually be on somebody's schedule somewhere, but I didn't notice them listed anywhere.

Well, there ARE a couple of Wagner operas to be heard on Saturday. For one, French Radio is broadcasting a performance (from Paris) of "Tristan & Isolde" while Radio 4 (the Netherlands) has "Die Gotterdammerung" slated for broadcast; it's a Reisopera performance from September 30.

(http://sites.radiofrance.fr/francemusique/accueil/)  & (www.radio4.nl/)

The Belgian station Klara is bringing us a Flemish Opera performance of "The Damnation of Faust" by Hector Berlioz -- not an opera (strictly speaking), although everyone these days (including the Met and English National Opera) seems to be presenting it as such.

Another work that is not strictly an opera (considered, rather, an oratorio by some) is Handel's "Jephtha" (from 1751) which can be heard on BBC Radio 3 in a performance that took place earlier this month (or possibly late in September) by the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff.

Moving into more modern territory, there's a double-bill of 2 one-act operas by Weinberg (both composed in 1975) on the schedule of one German radio station. The 2 operas in question are "Lady Magnesia" and "Congratulations." There's usually nothing in Weinberg's music to scare the horses out of the corral (in a manner of speaking), but Mozart it ain't (again, in a manner of speaking).

But wait! There IS a performance of "Carmen" lurking in the wings, but it won't take place until Monday (Oct.15) as the Met presents it on its FREE live audiostream, starting at 7:25 p.m.

Enjoy!

Renee Fleming

I was constantly being pushed toward a European ideal of what it means to be a classical or opera singer, let's say in the Renata Tebaldi mode. I reject that.
I'm American. I'm eclectic. I'm going to follow my musical passions. And if people don't like it, and it hurts my legacy, I'm not going to worry about that.

Ah-ha-VAH
November 3–4, 2012: Duruflé’s Requiem
Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs

Like Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé left the terrifying “Dies Irae” movement out of his 1947 Requiem. It is a requiem that tends toward contemplation and consolation. Other works include Daniel Pinkham’s Wedding Cantata, and Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, a setting of five poems by his wife, Hila Plitmann.

Handel
December 8, 2012: George Frideric Handel’s Messiah
Two and a half centuries after its first performance, Handel’sMessiah easily remains the most frequently performed, most beloved work in the choral canon. The Providence Singers and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra join forces for a December performance at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Betsy Burleigh conducts.
7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, The Vets, Providence

February 10, 2013: Franz Joseph Haydn’s Creation

(Also performed Saturday, Feb. 9, in New Bedford. More at New Bedford Symphony)

Crown
April 6-7, 2013: Fit for a Queen
Music was everywhere at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953: selections from England’s glorious musical past (Handel’s Zadok the Priest has been part of every coronation since George II in 1727)
and new works by Herbert Howells, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Healy Willan and others. The Singers
will perform music written for Queen Elizabeth at her coronation and during the six decades since, including new music from the recently published Choirbook for the Queen.

3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, St. Mary’s Church, Bristol

Gustav Mahler
May 4, 2013: Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 2
Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection Symphony,” was, with the Eighth Symphony, among Mahler’s
most popular and successful works during his lifetime. He was struck by a text he heard at the
funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow: “Auferstehen, ja auferstehen wirst du, mein Staub,
nach kurzer Ruhe!” (“You shall arise, my dust, yes you shall arise after a brief rest!”) The
Singers will perform as guest artists with the Rhode Island Philharmonic.

8 p.m. Saturday, May 4 The Vets, Providence
Tickets are available from the Rhode Island Philharmonic online or by phone: 401-248-7000
