Four decades into a legendary Met career, tenor Placido Domingo makes history singing the title role in Verdi's political thriller, which is written for a baritone. THE ENCHANTED ISLAND

In one extraordinary new work, lovers of Baroque opera have it all: the world's best singers, glorious music of the Baroque masters, and a story drawn from Shakespeare. In The Enchanted Island, the lovers from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights's Dream are shipwrecked on his other-worldly island of The Tempest. Inspired by the musical pastiches and masques of the 18th century, the work showcases arias ans ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and others, and a new libretto by Jeremy Sams. Eminent conductor William Christie leads an all-star cast with David Daniels (Prospero) and Joyce DiDonato (Sycorax) as the formidable foes. Placido Domingo as Neptune. Danielle de Niese as Ariel, and Luca Pisaroni as Caliban. Lisette Oropesa and Anthony Roth Costanza play Miranda and Ferdinand. The dazzling production is directed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch (Satyagraha and the Met's dazzling 125 anniversary gala).

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

For all of you who either can't get enough of Anna Netrebko, or can't get enough of Donizetti, or can't get enough of "Anna Bolena" -- the Met is broadcasting (you guessed it!) Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" this coming Saturday afternoon (2/4/12) with Anna Netrebko in the lead, along with the same cast that was seen and heard last October ( and even more recently, on PBS).

But wait: All of you Joyce Di Donato and/or Juan Diego Florez fans have reason to look forward to next Saturday as well, since the Belgian station Klara will be airing a (repeat) broadcast from last October of Rossini's "La Donna del Lago" which was presented at La Scala with Di Donato and Florez singing the roles of Elena and Giacomo, respectively.

Fans of 20th Century Opera have two choices in store for them: Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" & Reimann's "Lear."

The Shostakovich work will be broadcast on Swedish Radio in a recent performance from Goteborg with a cast of (mostly) unknown Swedish singers. But -- having heard a couple of them myself not so long ago -- I can safely predict it will be an exciting broadcast.

Aribert Reimann's "Lear" will be heard in a performance that was given in Hamburg on 1/15/12. It may not be as well-known among "Shakespeare Operas" as Verdi's "Macbeth" or Gounod's "Romeo & Juliette" (to take just two examples off the top of my head), but at its 1978 premiere, the work received rave reviews. Hopefully, the music's advanced harmonic idiom won't scare off too many potential listeners.

And what would a weekend of Opera on Internet Radio be like if we didn't get treated to at least ONE all-time favorite? Well, on Radio 4, you can listen to yet another "Traviata" (by Verdi) as it was given recently by the Reisopera in Enschede (the Netherlands).

Lastly, the Met's free LIVE audio-stream will be available tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. for those of you who would like an audio preview of the upcoming HD-transmission later this month of Verdi's "Ernani" with Angela Meade singing the role of Elvira. Point of interest: this young soprano alternated with Ms Netrebko earlier this season at the Met in the role of Anna Bolena.

Enjoy!

DAVE
