OPERA ON THE INTERNET WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
This Saturday, February 26, most internet radio stations have on their schedules the Met's LIVE performance of Gluck's "Iphigenie en Tauride", one of his last important operatic achievements, first performed in Paris in1779. You can listen to it on your internet radio station of choice, or actually watch it, as it is being simultaneously transmitted in High Definition in some area movie theatres. Well-known, 70-year-old tenor Placido Domingo takes on one of the leading roles in Saturday's performance.
Other broadcasts that may be of interest include a repeat airing from last October of Bizet's 2nd most popular opera after "Carmen." It's his earlier work "The Pearl Fishers" which can be heard on Austrian Radio (ORF).

On German Radio, "Der Liebe der Danae" (a work that appears late in the canon of operas by Richard Strauss) can be heard in a performance that was given in Berlin on January 23 of this year.

In the meantime, you can catch a LIVE broadcast from the Met of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" tomorrow night (Thursday) with Natalie Dessay singing the title role. She and other members of Thursday night's cast will be featured later this season when the Met relays a LIVE HD-transmission of this work. Check www.metopera.org for details on how to access their free audio stream when the broadcast is about to take place.
But you'll have to wait till Tuesday (March 1) if you're up for another hearing of Rossini's "Armida" in a free LIVE audio stream from the Met. Renee Fleming reprises the title role, and shares vocal honors with several others who appeared as cast members when this opera was shown in area theatres last May.
Happy Listening!
DAVE
