OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
This
summer's opera festival in Bregenz gets underway tomorrow (Thursday) with a
performance of Massenet's "Don Quichotte" which can be heard on ORF
(Austria).
Then on
Friday, for all you opera-lovers who've been looking forward to yet another
performance of Bizet's "Carmen" but have been disappointed lately
since it hasn't appeared on any opera stations' schedules in, oh, about a week
or so: Radio 3 (RAI) will be broadcasting it LIVE from Macerata.
Also from
this same festival in Macerata, on Saturday RAI will also be broadcasting a
LIVE performance of Verdi's "Macbeth."
There's even
more Verdi on hand as a LIVE performance of "Luisa Miller" can be
heard. This one features soprano Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role, with
tenor Piotr Beczala singing the part of Rodolfo. It's LIVE from Barcelona.
This year's
annual Gluck festival in Bayreuth is presenting a rare performance of his opera
"Antigono" (1756). You can hear it Saturday afternoon on German
Radio.
Finally, as
I mentioned last week, the LIVE performance of Puccini's "Tosca" from
Aix-en-Provence was video-streamed, but blocked in this country; yet, as I
predicted back then, some kind soul has uploaded the video on YouTube (with
French subtitles). However, BE WARNED: This is probably the lousiest production
of the opera I've ever seen, which is a crying shame since the 3 principals
(Angel Blue as Tosca, Joseph Calleja as Cavaradossi, & Alexey Markov as
Scarpia) are outstanding!
Enjoy!

THE MET SATURDAY AFTERNOON MATINEE IS ON HIATUS UNTIL DECEMBER. TUNE IN TO WQXR TO HEAR OTHER OPERA COMPANIES PERFORM AT 1:00PM
To compare with Nathan Meehan's worldwide statistics from the last 14 years, here is a look at the Met's all-time "top 40" through the 2017-18 season, taken from the theater's archival site.
Some of these operas, such as SAMSON ET DALILA, gained ground in the 2018-19 season, and the totals and rankings will reflect that when the list is updated, either this summer or early in the new season.
