The Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra is pleased and excited to announce that Dr. Joshua W. Rohde has accepted the position of Music Director.
Providence, RI, June 26, 2019

Joshua Rohde is the Director of Choral Activities at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he conducts all four of the university’s choral ensembles – Men’s Glee Club, Women’s Alden Voices, Festival Chorus, and the Chamber Choir. Joshua is also the Music Director of the Quincy Choral Society and an active professional cellist throughout the Boston area. His previous experience includes work at Boston University’s Marsh Chapel, the Harvard University Choruses, the University of Birmingham (UK), and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus (UK). He has prepared choruses to sing for conductors such as Harry Christophers, Andris Nelsons, and JohnStorgΓ₯rds.  As a cello soloist, he has played cello concertos with orchestras including Elgar, Haydn, Boccherini, and Shostakovich, and regularly works as a continuo cellist playing the choral-orchestral works of Bach.

Joshua Rohde has a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting and a Master of Sacred Music in Choral Conducting degree from Boston University, a Master of Arts in Choral              Conducting from the University of Birmingham (UK), and a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Minnesota, where he also earned a Bachelor degree in Civil               Engineering.

“The RICCO Search Committee undertook a rigorous process to find the candidate who would build on our history and traditions, and we are delighted to have found Joshua Rohde,”  commented Mary Tafuri Ross, RICCO President-elect. In addition to an examination of qualifications and interviews, the final candidates conducted singer rehearsal so that the singers could contribute to deciding on the Music Director.

Dr. Rohde is the fifth Music Director in RICCO’s 62-year history, following Dr. Edward Markward, who was awarded the honorary title of Conductor Laureate by the corporation.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

Into the second week of July, we still have plenty of opera to enjoy on the internet. Beginning tomorrow (Thursday), there are at least 2 offerings of interest. In the opinion of many opera-lovers, there's always room for yet another "Cav/Pag" broadcast; and so, LIVE from Hannover, that's what you'll be hearing, should you decide to click on the link below.

On the other hand, if you happen to be in a change-of-pace kind of mood, there's a LIVE performance on French Radio of Kurt Weill's "Rise & Fall of the City of Mahagonny" as part of this summer's Aix-en-Provence Festival. Soprano Karita Mattila makes a rather rare excursion into Weill-territory (so to speak) as she sings the role of Leocadia Begbick in this one.(I'd also like to point out that, as far as I can tell, these Aix-en-Provence performances this year are being video-streamed, but NOT here in the U.S. On the other hand, we can usually depend on some kind soul(s) to upload a performance -- or two -- on YouTube in the days ahead.)

Along the same lines, there's a LIVE performance of Wolfgang Rihm's 1978 chamber opera "Jakob Lenz" -- also from the same festival. If you care to listen to an audio broadcast of the work, French Radio has it on Friday.

There will also be a LIVE video-stream from Stuttgart on Friday of Boito's "Mefistofele." The link below will bring you to a video trailer for the production that will be shown on Friday.

Then on Saturday, Radio 4 (the Netherlands) is broadcasting the audio of yesterday's performance (again, from this same festival in Aix-en-Provence) of Puccini's "Tosca" with tenor Joseph Calleja in the role of Cavaradossi. And yes, there WAS a LIVE video on Tuesday, but as expected, it was blocked here in the U.S.

Recently, a performance of Massenet's version of the Cinderella story ("Cendrillon") was video-streamed, direct from Glyndebourne. On Saturday, it's WRTI which has scheduled a 2017 performance from Opera Delaware of Rossini's take on the story, i.e. "La Cenerentola."

For many of us who are "of a certain age" (ahem), our first introduction to the music of Franz von Suppe probably came to us in a cartoon, as this composer's "Poet & Peasant" Overture was often used, usually to accompany scenes of good-old cartoon violence, not to mention the "Light Cavalry" Overture popping up whenever the cartoon featured horses galloping. Well, on Saturday, German Radio has scheduled a broadcast of Suppe's "Der Teufel auf Erden" (1878) as performed COMPLETE (not just an overture) this past June in Chemnitz. The 2nd link below is to a trailer for this particular production.

Enjoy!

DAVE
