This summer's Bayreuth Festival continues tomorrow (Thursday) with a LIVE broadcast on BR-Klassik of "Tristan & Isolde."

Then on Saturday (August 3), there's more rare Offenbach on hand as German Radio broadcasts a LIVE performance from Berlin of the 1873 one-act comic opera "Pomme d'Api" ("Apple-Cheeks").

At the same time, ORF is airing the May 28, 2019 performance of what seems to be Korngold's most popular opera "Die Tote Stadt." (Even the currently popular Jonas Kaufmann is scheduled to sing the leading tenor role in this opera in Munich next season.) In any case, the performance in question comes to us, direct from La Scala.

Then, on Sunday, for all you 21st-century-opera enthusiasts, Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin (born in 1957) will have her new opera "Whiteley" performed in Sydney. As we enter the final days of July, for Wagner enthusiasts that means it's time for this summer's Bayreuth Festival to get underway. And so, starting tomorrow (Thursday), you can listen to the opening night performance of "Tannhauser." If you click on the link below, you can see the broadcast schedule for other operas being transmitted in the next several days, with links to various internet radio stations that will be carrying the performances. You may notice that the 4 Ring operas are not listed at all, since this is one of those summers where the Ring cycle isn't performed, while many of Wagner's other works are given the attention they deserve.

Another summer opera festival that attracts many fans/listeners is the one that is produced in Salzburg. And so, on Saturday, you can hear a LIVE broadcast from this year's festival, the opera being Mozart's "Idomeneo" coming to us via ORF (Austria).

Although not very well-known, the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad is also underway, so that Saturday brings us a LIVE broadcast from this year's festival of "Matilde di Shabran." Listening to this broadcast should probably whet your appetite for the more famous Rossini Festival in Pesaro which will begin next month & which will include (among others) performances of "Semiramide" and "Demetrio & Polibio" -- his 1st, which he began composing at the ripe old age of 14 !!!
