Yannick
Nézet-Séguin leads the classic John Dexter production of Poulenc’s devastating
story of faith and martyrdom. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sings the touching
role of Blanche and soprano Karita Mattila, a legend in her own time, returns
to the Met as the Prioress.
Duration: 3 hrs. 9 min.
World
Premiere: Teatro alla Scala, Milan, 1957. One of the most successful operas of
the later decades of the 20th century, Dialogues des Carmélites is a rare case
of a modern work that is equally esteemed by audiences and experts. The opera
focuses on a young member of an order of Carmelite nuns, the aristocratic
Blanche de la Force, who must overcome a pathological timidity in order to
answer her life’s calling. The score reflects key aspects of its composer’s
personality: Francis Poulenc was an urbane Parisian with a profound mystical
dimension, and the opera addresses both the characters’ internal lives and
their external realities.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Tomorrow's
FREE live audio-stream from the Met happens to be the last one of the current
opera season, so all Wagner enthusiasts (and many other opera fans) may want to
tune in at 5:55 pm for a performance of Wagner's "Siegfried."
Then on
Friday (May 10), Radio 3 (RAI) will be transmitting the first of 2 opera
broadcasts in the next few days, this one being a LIVE performance from Venice
of Puccini's "Turandot" followed (on Saturday) by a LIVE performance
from Naples of Wagner's "Die Walkure."

For many
opera fans, the Met's final LIVE HD-transmission of the season will be an
enticing proposition, as Poulenc's "Dialogues of the Carmelites" can
be seen in select movie theatres in our area. The performance may also be heard
on several internet radio stations.
Swedish
Radio, on the other hand, will be presenting a LIVE performance from Malmo of
Danish composer Bo Holten's new opera "Schlagt sie Tot" ("Kill
Them All"). The title of the work may be a bit misleading, since the
opera's plot deals primarily with events that took place during the Reformation
period, and the score actually incorporates some of the actual music which
Martin Luther composed, based on the Psalms..
Besides the
"Siegfried" broadcast from the Met on Thursday and the
"Walkure" broadcast from Naples on Saturday, Wagner enthusiasts can
indulge in even more Wagner on Sunday with a LIVE broadcast from Nuremberg of
"Lohengrin."
Enjoy!
