OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

The Met's 2018/2019 season may be over, but there is still plenty of opera from various venues, many of which will be available to us on the internet in the next few days.

Beginning tomorrow (Thursday), Radio 3 (RAI) will be broadcasting a LIVE performance from Rome of Prokofiev's dramatic & macabre "Fiery Angel.

Then on Friday (May 24), there are actually two LIVE opera broadcasts that are worth noting, one of which is the broadcast from Genoa of the opera world's most popular double-bill -- "Cavalleria Rusticana" & "Pagliacci." This may actually be a video-stream, although the link below does not actually mention that.

Also on Friday, from Madrid, there's a LIVE broadcast of Puccini's "La Rondine" to be heard on Radio Clasica.

Saturday is brimming over with some potentially exciting opera broadcasts. Fans of soprano Anna Netrebko and tenor Jonas Kaufmann will, no doubt, be enthused over the fact that Radio 3 (BBC) is broadcasting an April 2019 performance from Covent Garden of Verdi's "La Forza del Destino" featuring the dynamic soprano-tenor duo mentioned above.

A performance from Helsinki that is taking place this week will also be broadcast on Saturday. The opera: Debussy's beautifully atmospheric "Pelleas & Melisande."

There's also some Richard Strauss on tap via ORF, as a LIVE performance from the Vienna State Opera of "Die Frau ohne Schatten" can be heard.

There are also 2 operas that one rarely encounters these days. One of them is a comic opera, stylistically somewhat reminiscent of Mozart: Albert Lortzing's "Der Wildschutz" ("The Poachers"), a work that premiered in 1842 and which can now be heard in a LIVE performance from Kassel on German Radio.

Last week, Danish radio gave us a performance of Danish composer August Enna's "Kleopatra" (1893), and are now following through with yet another rare Danish gem: Peter Heise's 1878 "King & Marshall" in its current production from Copenhagen.

On Sunday, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich will be broadcasting a LIVE performance of Gluck's "Alceste" (1767), a video of which is scheduled to be shown on the internet on June 1.

Enjoy!

DAVE
