 OPERA ON THE INTERNET
 WITH
 DAVE D' AGUANNO

With several internet radio stations programming performances of Handel's "Messiah" during the next several days, actual opera broadcasts are at a minimum; however, there are still some highly attractive offerings scheduled for the delight of most opera fans. One of these would be the free LIVE video-stream from Munich of Puccini's "Il Trittico." The 3 operas that this work is comprised of -- "Il Tabarro" - "Suor Angelica" - "Gianni Schicchi" -- will be performed on Saturday afternoon.

At the same time, the Met will be broadcasting a LIVE performance of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" which can be heard on several internet radio stations.

To complicate matters, in deciding whether to go with Puccini from Munich or Mozart from New York, there's the December 3 performance of Meyerbeer's grand opera "Le Prophete" (1849) which is scheduled to be broadcast on German Radio. The performance in question took place in Berlin which, in recent years, has also staged Meyerbeer's "Le Huguenots."

Aside from the above-mentioned December 23 offerings, there's a LIVE broadcast from Genoa scheduled on Friday (Dec. 22), the opera in question being Verdi's "Rigoletto" with baritone Leo Nucci in the title role. Yes, that's Leo Nucci who's been singing on the operatic stages since the 1970s and has reportedly sung the role of Rigoletto over 400 times!

Then, as a post-Christmas treat, the Met is broadcasting a LIVE performance on Tuesday (the 26th) at 7:25 pm of Humperdinck's "Hansel & Gretel" as part of their series of FREE live audio-streams.

Enjoy! -- And Happy Holidays to you all!

Simonetta Puccini has died. She was, it seems, the last surviving direct heir to the composer. She was the daughter of his son Antonio. She was in some ways a difficult person but balanced that with a genuine love and devotion to the works of her grandfather, whom she never met. He died in 1924 and she was born in 1929.

REGARDING JAMES LEVINE

The musical world continues to be roiled by the allegations against Maestro James Levine, which he has denied. At the moment, he is suspended from the Met while the Met awaits the results of the investigation that is being conducted by an outside evaluator.  I will include links to articles about this issue but I will make no further comment.
