 OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

The Met has three LIVE broadcasts in store for us during the next few days, beginning tomorrow (Dec. 14) at 7:25 with a FREE audio-stream of Lehar's most popular operetta -- "The Merry Widow" -- with Susan Graham in the role of Hanna Glawari. Then on Saturday, it's the matinee performance of Bellini's "Norma" with an additional broadcast on Monday (Dec. 18) of Humperdinck's "Hansel & Gretel." Thanks to the Met, the holiday season is being ushered in in true operatic style!

Worth mentioning, of course, is the LIVE video-stream from Brussels of Poulenc's intense and dramatic "Dialogues of the Carmelites." This one is being offered to us on Friday (Dec. 15) on Opera Vision, but can be viewed during the next several months as well.

Also on Friday, Radio 3 (RAI) has scheduled a LIVE performance from Bologna of Puccini's "Tosca."

As an alternative to listening to the Met's matinee broadcast of "Norma" on Saturday, fans of 21st century opera may want to check out Swedish Radio for a broadcast of B. Tommy Andersson's new opera "The Importance of Being Earnest" (based on Oscar Wilde's play of the same name). The performance being aired took place in Vadstena this past July.

On the other hand, Radio 4 (the Netherlands) has scheduled a LIVE broadcast from Amsterdam of Rimsky-Korsakov's exotic "The Golden Cockerel" -- an opera which seems to have made the rounds of several opera houses in the last year or so.

Then on Sunday, LIVE from Paris, a performance of Janacek's final opera -- "From the House of the Dead" -- can be heard on French Radio.

Enjoy!

At the moment, he is suspended from the Met while the Met awaits the results of the investigation that is being conducted by an outside evaluator.  I will include links to articles about this issue but I will make no further comment.
