OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

For some post-Thanksgiving Day opera on Friday (November 24), opera fans have a choice of two Italian works on internet radio. One of them happens to be a LIVE performance from Venice of Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera." This one can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI).

The other one is Puccini's "La Rondine" which can also be heard LIVE, but this one comes to us via Radio Classique in a performance that will be taking place in Toulouse.

For your listening pleasure on Saturday, we are given a rare chance to hear the amazingly versatile Placido Domingo in a Handel opera, as Radio 4 (the Netherlands) broadcasts the September 12, 2017 performance from La Scala of Handel's 1724 opera "Tamerlano" -- an opera, incidentally, which the man composed the same year he composed two other masterpieces: "Rodelinda" and "Giulio Cesare." In any case, Domingo can be heard in the tenor role of Bajazet in this one.

Moving ahead into the 19th century, Rossini's delightful take on the Cinderella tale -- "La Cenerentola" -- gets a LIVE transmission from Stockholm.

In a more serious vein, there's Donizetti's "La Favorite" as performed LIVE in Madrid. This one can be heard on Radio Clasica.

Then, moving WAY ahead into the 21st century, NPR is giving us a chance to hear Craig Bohmler's new opera "Riders of the Purple Sage." If that title sounds familiar, it's because Bohmler's opera is based on the Zane Grey novel of the same name, which was the basis of 3 movies made during the 20th century. The world premiere of this opera took place in Tucson in February of this year, and thanks to NPR, interested listeners can tune in to this novel piece on Saturday.

Enjoy! -- And have a safe & happy Thanksgiving!

DAVE
