THOMAS ADES'
The Exterminating Angel
Following the rapturous response to his last opera, The Tempest, the Met presents the American premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel, inspired by the classic Luis Buñuel film of the same name. Hailed by the New York Times at its 2016 Salzburg Festival premiere as “inventive and audacious … a major event,” The Exterminating Angel is a surreal fantasy about a dinner party from which the guests can’t escape. Tom Cairns, who wrote the libretto, directs the new production, and Adès conducts his own adventurous new opera.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Coming up on Saturday afternoon (November 18), it's the
LIVE HD-transmission from the Met of "The Exterminating Angel" by
British composer Thomas Ades whose earlier opera "The Tempest" also
received an HD-transmission a few years ago. You can see this one at select movie
theatres.
If you decide to listen to some opera on the internet
instead, tuning in to Radio 3 (RAI) might be a good choice, especially if your
operatic taste is of a more conservative nature. The opera on this Italian
radio station is a LIVE performance from Florence of Bellini's "La
Sonnambula."
From NPR, it's a broadcast of Franco Faccio's
"Amleto" ("Hamlet") which has received several revivals in
recent years. The broadcast on Saturday is of a performance that took place in
the fall of 2014 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
On Sunday, there are two opera broadcasts that may also
be of interest to most opera-lovers. One of them is a LIVE broadcast from Lyric
Opera of Chicago of Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers." Appearing in the
cast are two of the same singers who performed these same roles at the Met not
too long ago: Tenor Matthew Polenzani as Nadir and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien as
Zurga.
From the Paris Opera, Puccini's "Madame
Butterfly" can be heard on French Radio in another LIVE broadcast.
Enjoy!
DAVE

Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi
Rigoletto
has seen it all. He’s the court jester, spinning other people’s suffering into
entertainment. But behind his bitter façade, Rigoletto holds one thing sacred:
the love for his daughter, Gilda. After a vengeful curse makes Gilda the target
of the Duke’s dangerous obsession, will Rigoletto’s fatherly devotion be enough
to save her?
