ROMEO

AND

JULIETTE

The “thrilling star team” (New York Observer) of Diana Damrau and Vittorio Grigolo sing with “white-hot sensuality and impassioned lyricism” (New York Times) as Shakespeare’s classic star-crossed lovers in Gounod’s lush adaptation. Director Bartlett Sher’s “brilliant and inspired new production … is a revelation” (Huffington Post), and has already won acclaim for its vivid 18th-century milieu and stunning costumes during runs at Salzburg and La Scala. The performances are led by the “richly textured and vibrant conducting” (New York Times) of Gianandrea Noseda.

Length: 2 hrs. 56 min.

Cavalleria Rusticana-Pagliacci

Opera’s most enduring tragic double bill returns in an evocative new production from Sir David McVicar (Giulio Cesare, Maria Stuarda, Il Trovatore), who sets the verismo action across two time periods but in the same Sicilian setting. Marcelo Álvarez rises to the challenge of playing the dual tenor roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci. Rae Smith (War Horse) has designed the moodily atmospheric 1900 village square setting of Cavalleria Rusticana, which transforms to a 1948 truck stop for the doomed vaudeville troupe of Pagliacci.

Length: 2 hours, 53 minutes

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

Opera fans with a particular fondness for the music of Charles Gounod will be able to enjoy TWO of his most famous operas in the days ahead. The main attraction for many would probably be the LIVE HD-transmission this Saturday (January 21) of "Romeo & Juliette" with tenor Vittorio Grigolo and soprano Diana Damrau in the leading roles. Not only will this opera be shown in select movie theatres, but an audio broadcast of the performance will be available on several internet radio stations.

Before that, Gounod's "Faust" can be heard on Friday in a LIVE broadcast from Florence. Radio 3 (RAI) has it on their schedule, as well as a Saturday broadcast of Verdi's "Macbeth" from Palermo.

If you happen to prefer the music of Mozart, there's a LIVE performance of "The Abduction from the Seraglio" on Radio 4 (the Netherlands), direct from Amsterdam.

In the meantime, you can kick-start your opera weekend by tuning in to the Met's FREE live audio-stream tomorrow (Thursday) for a performance of Bizet's ever-popular "Carmen."

Enjoy!
