Libretto by Amin Maalouf

Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s breakthrough opera was described by the New York Times as “transfixing…a lushly beautiful score.” Commissioned by the Salzburg Festival, where it was first seen in 2000, it will now finally have its Metropolitan Opera premiere in a dazzling new production by Robert Lepage, featuring glimmering ribbons of LED lights that extend across the length of the stage and over the orchestra pit. Eric Owens is the knight on a quest of love, Susanna Phillips is his lover on the other side of the sea, and Tamara Mumford is the pilgrim who brings messages back and forth. Conductor Susanna Mälkki makes her Met debut.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's "L'Amour de Loin" will be shown in HD in various local movie theatres this coming Saturday afternoon (December 10). This LIVE performance marks one of those rare occasions when an opera by a female composer is being showcased at the Met. As usual, if you prefer to simply enjoy the opera in audio format only, it can be accessed on any number of internet radio stations.

Another contemporary work -- Giorgio Battistelli's "Il Medico dei Pazzi" ("The Doctor of the Mad") -- can be heard on Sunday on Radio 3 (RAI). This comic opera, which received its world premiere as recently as June 22, 2014, received several performances just this past October in Venice, and it is one of those performances that can be heard on Sunday.

Back on more familiar operatic territory, Verdi's comic masterpiece "Falstaff" appears on ORF's schedule, as this Austrian radio station will be transmitting last Sunday's performance of the work, as heard in Vienna.

"Fedora" -- probably Umberto Giordano's 2nd most popular opera after "Andrea Chenier" -- gets a LIVE broadcast from Stockholm on Swedish Radio.

An unusual double bill turns up on the schedule for Radio 4 (the Netherlands). Rather than the ever-popular "I Pagliacci" by Ruggero Leoncavallo, the station has chosen two of this composer's less frequently performed works to be heard on Saturday. First up is "Edipo Re" (based on the Sophocles tragedy), his final work which was left slightly incomplete upon his death. The other work is his own version of "La Boheme" which differs from Puccini's far more famous version, mainly in the focus being on the Musetta/Marcello relationship rather than that of Mimi & Rodolfo. The performances at hand originated in Amsterdam in the 70s. ("Edipo Re" - November 5, 1977 --- "La Boheme" - November 17, 1973)
Last (but not least), on Monday evening (Dec. 12) at 7:25, the Met will be offering a FREE live audio-stream of Verdi's "Nabucco" with Placido Domingo featured in the title role.

Enjoy!
