Within a fever-dream
assemblage of Twitter feeds, news reports, declassified video and court
testimonies, four singers expose the media hysteria surrounding Chelsea
(formerly Bradley) Manning, who infamously leaked hundreds of classified
documents. Named one of the best classical music recordings of 2015 by The New
York Times, this powerful work grapples with how we as individuals and a nation
can confront the information Manning exposed. Composed by Ted Hearne with
Libretto by Mark Doten.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Last week the Met gave us a chance to experience "L'Amour de
Loin" -- the 1st work of a female composer ever to be given as an
HD-transmission. As it so happens, this coming Saturday (December 17), the work of yet another
female composer will be featured. 47-year-old Austrian composer Johanna Doderer
recently completed her composition of "Liliom" which received its
world premiere performance just last month in Munich, and it is the November 4th performance of this work which can be
heard on German Radio. As a point of interest, none other than Giacomo Puccini
was said to have at one time considered writing an opera of his own, based on
the same Molnar drama as Ms Doderer's 21st century work. Please note that, in
addition to the audio link, I have also provided a link to some brief
video excerpts of this brand-new opera.
(video excerpts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivBmsPrF54g )
Moving backwards into the 20th century, Benjamin Britten's final opera
"Death in Venice" is featured on Radio 4 (the Netherlands) in a
performance that took place in Amsterdam back in March 2001.
Composed as far back as in the latter part of the 19th century, Massenet's
"Thais" can be heard on ORF (Austria) in a performance from last
summer's Salzburg Festival (August 2016), with tenor/baritone Placido Domingo
singing the role of Athanael.
Of primary interest for fans of soprano Patricia Racette, the Met's
broadcast this Saturday is a LIVE performance of
"Salome" by Richard Strauss, with Ms Racette in the title role. This
broadcast can be accessed on many internet radio stations.
Also from the Met, on next Tuesday (December 20), you can listen to a FREE
live performance of Mozart's "Magic Flute."
But why not jump-start your opera-binging experience by tuning in to Radio
3 (RAI) tomorrow (Dec. 15) for a LIVE performance of
Massenet's "Werther" with tenor Juan Diego Florez taking on the
dramatic title role?
Enjoy!
