OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Although the LIVE Saturday matinee broadcasts from the Met have ceased for this season, there are still a number of noteworthy opera broadcasts that are well worth one's time. For example, BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting a recent performance from London's Royal Opera House of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor." With soprano Diana Damrau singing the title role, I am sure that this one will be of particular interest to Damrau fans and/or Donizetti fans.

If you happen to be in the mood for something a bit off the beaten track, you might want to tune in to German Radio for the April 8th performance from Bonn of what has been described as a "tango opera." It's "Maria de Buenos Aires" -- a 1968 work by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla.

Jumping from 1968 all the way back to 1682, Lully's "Persee" can be heard on French Radio in a performance that took place in Paris on April 6th of this year.

There's also a matinee performance from Amsterdam (i.e. morning here in RI) of Bellini's "La Straniera" (1828). Though not as popular as some of his other works, this relatively early work of Bellini is sure to please admirers of his other operas.

You may also want to consider Friday's broadcast from RAI of Puccini's "La Fanciulla del West" -- direct from La Scala.

Enjoy!

DAVE
