OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Next weekend presents us with operatic choices that range from the comical and silly ("Pirates of Penzance" - "La Belle Helene") to the deeply tragic ("Pelleas & Melisande" - "Le Roi Arthus" - "The Passenger"). In the latter category, Weinberg's 1968 opera "The Passenger" carries a great deal of weight, especially since it centers around the accidental meeting on a cruise ship (years later) between Holocaust survivor Marta and her former persecutor Lise. The performance being broadcast this Saturday took place in Chicago this past February and can be heard on NPR.

Continuing in pretty much the same vein is the better-known "Pelleas & Melisande" by Claude Debussy. This one is actually being broadcast on Friday (June 26) on Radio 3 (RAI) in a recent performance from Florence (June 18).

German Radio has scheduled a broadcast of the May 25th performance from Paris of Chausson's "Le Roi Arthus" which has already come to us on at least one other radio station (as well as a video of the June 2 performance). Having seen the video, I can personally vouch for the excellence of the performance with tenor Roberto Alagna and mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch "on fire" in the roles of the doomed lovers Lancelot and Guinevere.

In the mood for something in a much lighter vein? If you don't mind waiting till Monday afternoon, BBC Radio 3 is broadcasting a recent performance from English National Opera of "The Pirates of Penzance" -- a fairly well-known Gilbert & Sullivan treat.

Plus, on Saturday, there's what has to be one of the silliest comic operas one is ever likely to encounter: Offenbach's "La Belle Helene." Last Sunday's performance from Paris is being broadcast on French Radio. However, if you'd care to actually WATCH the visual shenanigans that go with the music, you can check out the VIDEO of Saturday's performance (with German subtitles).

Enjoy!

DAVE
