Joyce DiDonato Tweets:

At the International Opera Awards, meeting the one and only, singular, astonishing Dame Janet Baker. There is nothing quite like meeting a living legend, one who has been an idol since you started dreaming of a career in their field, and to have them be exceedingly generous, kind and warm. I shall never forget it and treasure the opportunity to thank her for all she contributed to this art form and to the world!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

With the Met's current season drawing to a close, there's still plenty of wonderful opera worth listening to. For example, this very evening at 7:25, the Met's free LIVE audio-stream will be offering yet another performance of Verdi's "Rigoletto."

Then, on Saturday (May 4), the Met broadcast is of one of the 20th century's greatest operas (in many people's opinion): namely, Francis Poulenc's dramatically charged "Dialogues of the Carmelites." The current production features Isabel Leonard in the role of Blanche. Ms Leonard was seen earlier this season as Miranda in the Thomas Ades setting of "The Tempest." Also in the cast of the Poulenc opera is soprano Patricia Racette who, not so long ago, sang the role of Blanche to tremendous acclaim; this time around, she can be heard in the role of Madame Lidoine.

Another LIVE broadcast that can be heard this Saturday is of Britten's "Peter Grimes" (another 20th century masterpiece) which comes to us from the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. You can catch this one on Swedish radio.

French radio, on the other hand, will be broadcasting a performance of Mozart's "Don Giovanni." For some strange reason, their website has not seen fit to disclose any of the details of the performers or performance location. However, for many Mozart enthusiasts, that might not matter, as long as the performance is a good one!

Enjoy!

DAVE

In memoriam
Janos Starker
GRAMMY-winning cellist Janos Starker died April 28. A cause of death was not revealed. He was 88. A native of Budapest, Hungary, Starker migrated to the United States in 1948 with the help of Indiana University, where he later became a music faculty fixture. Starker's career spanned more than 50 years, producing more than 165 recordings and thousands of concerts, including with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was highly acclaimed for his work with the Bach cello suites and the Dvořák concerto. He earned three GRAMMY nominations throughout his career, including a win in 1997 for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (Without Orchestra) for Bach: Suites For Solo Cello Nos. 1-6. Aside from his performances and recordings, Starker was a known for teaching, having taught music as early as age 8. "Janos Starker was a masterful cellist known for playing with technical perfection and creating an impeccable sound," said Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow. "His deep passion for music was evident not only in his performances, but as an educator as well, teaching new generations the art and precision of performing classical music."

This Sunday, May 4, Zeljko Lucic reprises his role as Rigoletto, the same that he sung for this season's Met HD production but in the traditional garb of the Renaissance royal jester. However, since it's on the radio, you can imagine him wearing whatever you want.
from the KDFC program:
The vengeful court jester Rigoletto desperately tries to protect his daughter from disaster in this heart-wrenching tragedy. Serbian baritone Zeljko Lucic stars along with soprano Aleksandra Kurzak as Gilda and the Italian tenor Francesco Demuro as the Duke.

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 2

Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection Symphony,” was, with Symphony No. 8, among Mahler’s most popular and successful works during his lifetime. Preoccupied by visions of his own death and by larger philosophical questions about the purpose of life, Mahler pondered a kind of immortality through artistic achievement.

Mahler himself wrote the text sung by soprano, alto, and chorus at the end of the fifth movement: “Mit Flügeln, die ich mir errungen in heißem Liebesstreben, werd’ ich entschweben zum Licht!” (“With wings that I won for myself during passionate struggles of love, I shall ascend to the light!”) He was also struck by “Auferstehen” (“Resurrection”), a hymn by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, which he heard at the funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow: “Auferstehen, ja auferstehen wirst du, mein Staub, nach kurzer Ruhe!” (“You shall arise, my dust, yes you shall arise after a brief rest!”) The Singers will perform as guest artists with the Rhode Island Philharmonic.
