WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
There are actually 3 "blockbuster operas" on
tap for us this coming weekend -- and none of them are by Wagner!
First of all, Verdi's "Don Carlo" -- in its
5-act version -- will be broadcast LIVE from the Met this Saturday afternoon.
The cast includes mezzo-soprano Anna Smirnova (Eboli) and bass Ferruccio
Furlanetto (King Philip), both of whom appeared in these same roles when the
opera was given its HD-transmission a few seasons back. Others in the cast this
Saturday include Ramon Vargas, Barbara Frittoli, and baritone Dimitri
Hvorostovsky who was recently seen in the Met's new production of Verdi's
"Un Ballo in Maschera."
Another "blockbuster" comes to us via Radio
4 (the Netherlands) when Rossini's final opera -- "William Tell" --
can be heard, the performance itself stemming from a recent run of performances
that were given by the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam. Although the website
mentions that a few "cuts" were made in the score, the opera is still
likely to run for close to 4 hours! As a side-note, I believe that this
production will be seen at the Met in the 2014/2015 season.
The 3rd "blockbuster" of the weekend is
actually so LONG that it's going to be split up into 2 separate broadcasts:
Acts 1, 2, & 3 of Meyerbeer's "Vasco de Gama" will be broadcast
on Saturday, with Acts 4 & 5 being given on Sunday. Meyerbeer fans,
naturally, will rejoice, since this is the very first opportunity for anybody
in the world to hear ALL the music that Meyerbeer ever composed for his final
opera, which eventually came to be known as "L'Africaine." The
performance itself was given in Chemnitz on February 4 & 5 of this year.
And don't worry: If you miss it, it will soon be released on CD (according to
the information I have at hand).

Aside from those 3 gigantic pieces of music, there are
3 more operas of more reasonable length that can be heard this weekend, one of
which is being presented on Swedish Radio in an archival studio recording from
1953: Verdi's "Otello" starring tenor Set Svanholm!

Donizetti enthusiasts may want to bask in the melodic
beauties of his opera "Lucrezia Borgia" which was recently performed
in Brussels and which is on the Klara radio station's schedule for this
Saturday. Another side-note: This opera, with this same cast, will soon be
available as a FREE video-stream on the opera company's website.

On the other hand, French Radio will be airing the
February 16, 2013 performance of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" via
London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. With baritone Simon Keenlyside
singing the title role, this opera will be shown at the Cable Car Cinema on
April 14.

Fiddler Doodles, and a Doodler Fiddles
To
the Editor:
Re
“Philharmonic Adds More Archives on the Web” (Arts, Briefly item, Feb. 22):
The
scribbling of musicians in their orchestra parts are mostly about cues,
unexpected tempo changes and interpretive instructions from various conductors
that are not in the printed score.
Yet I
have noted that while my younger colleagues in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra
confined their orchestral graffiti mostly to musical matters, the older
musicians (like me) were more concerned with physical needs and a relentless
struggle against boredom, particularly when playing repeated eighth notes in a
bel canto opera one has played a hundred times.
Consequently,
we old-timers meticulously penned in the number of minutes of each act.
Moreover,
during long rests (as in Wagner’s “Ring”), both young and old musicians often
resorted to doodling, cartooning and (forgive me, Maestro Levine!) caricatures
of singers and conductors that were not always flattering.

Not opera but a movie about elderly opera singers--
QuartetTom Courtenay and Maggie Smith |
Lifelong friends Wilf and Reggie, together with former colleague Cissy, are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi's birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton, a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, also Reggie's ex-wife, moves into the home to everyone's surprise, the plans for this year's concert start to unravel. As old grudges threaten to undermine past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on.
