Riccardo Zandonai’s
Francesca da Rimini
Saturday, March 16, 2013, 12 pm ET
Eva-Maria Westbroek and Marcello Giordani star
in the Met's production of Zandonai's melodic gem, inspired by Dante's Inferno.
Marco Armiliato conducts.
Eva-Maria Westbroek “exudes warmth and
intelligence in the title role” (Financial Times).
Her “dramatic soprano and fine acting”
captured “Francesca’s vulnerability in the softer lyrical moment, yet her voice
had enough heft to accurately cut through the swelling orchestration” (AP) of
Zandonai’s rare gem.
Westbroek’s “strong and powerful voice conveys
all the passion and pathos of Francesca’s plight” (Huffington Post).
“From the moment the curtain rises you are
awed by Ezio Frigerio’s towering, grandly detailed sets, designed for a 1984
resurrection of a work neglected since 1918. Franca Squarciapino’s costumes
delight your eyes. Zandonai’s luxuriously orchestrated music caresses your
ears. Conductor Marco Armiliato
elicited fine playing of the gorgeous, resourceful score.”–New York Times
“The
production itself is sumptuous to look at” (Huffington Post).

WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Zandonai's "Francesca da Rimini" is being
shown this coming Saturday (March 16) at 12 noon at area movie theatres, as
part of the Met's ongoing series of LIVE HD-transmissions. Eva-Maria Westbroek
sings the title role (some of you may remember her as Sieglinde in Wagner's
"Walkure" 2 seasons ago), while tenor Marcello Giordani sings the
role of Paolo, her brother-in-law and (shock of all shocks!) lover in the
opera. Most internet radio stations will be broadcasting the audio of this
performance.
Wagner enthusiasts need not despair, however, since
two of his Ring Cycle operas are being broadcast this Saturday.
First of all, from Paris (on French Radio), you can
listen to the February 17 performance of "Die Walkure" while, on
German Radio, there's a Berlin performance from March 1 of the opera
"Siegfried."

Even Verdi enthusiasts get to hear what must surely be
one of their favorites, as the Met's FREE live audio-stream will be giving us
"La Traviata" tomorrow evening, starting at 7:25 p.m. Diana Damrau
(recently seen as Gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto") will be singing the
role of Violetta, and tenor Placido Domingo takes on the BARITONE role of Giorgio
Germont. This is certainly a MUST for fans of these singers, I would assume.

Enjoy!
DAVE

On-Line performances:
This is a complete performance of Donizetti's
"Lucrezia Borgia" as presented last month in Brussels.
Supposedly, there's a way of accessing English
subtitles, but I was unable to get them to appear when I tried doing what they
said to do.
This video should be available for a couple of weeks
or so.
Here's are links to the recent HD-transmission of
"Rigoletto" from the Met:
As usual, if you're interested, you should probably
"grab" them while they are still available.
There's also what appears to be some of the recent
"Parsifal" as well, but (as of this writing) it doesn't seem to be
all there (yet?).
"Parsifal" & "Rigoletto" seem
to have been uploaded by the same person (Carlotta?).

Not opera but a movie about elderly opera singers--
QuartetTom Courtenay and Maggie Smith |
Lifelong friends Wilf and Reggie, together with former colleague Cissy, are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi's birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton, a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, also Reggie's ex-wife, moves into the home to everyone's surprise, the plans for this year's concert start to unravel. As old grudges threaten to undermine past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on.
