Week of August 9 - August 16, 2012

Breaking news from Dave D'Aguanno--

I just learned that French Radio will be broadcasting Juan Diego Florez in one of the operas from this year's Rossini Festival in Pesaro.

The opera is "Matilde di Shabran" & Florez has the tenor lead. It happens to be the same role that brought him to the attention of the public when he stepped in & sang it at the last minute at this same festival back in 1996 (?) when tenor Bruce Ford became ill. Florez reputedly learned the role in record-time, too.

The link to French Radio is here:

http://sites.radiofrance.fr./francemusique/accueil/

It starts at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday).

Have a good day!

DAVE

NEW OPERA !!

A contemporary re-telling of The Scarlet Letter by Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne

From: Sara Jobin
Date: Sat, Jul 28, 2012 at 7:12 PM
Subject: Pearl is happening August 13!

Dear friends,

Many of you know about my collaboration with Carol Gilligan for the past 4 years, working on a new opera where women's psychology takes center stage.  We will perform the first workshop of this piece on Monday, August 13th in Lenox, MA as a benefit for Shakespeare & Company and I would be honored if you could come!  It's called Pearl, and it's a contemporary re-telling of The Scarlet Letter by Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne.

For all of us working on it it's been a labor of love, and transformational in our lives.  The composer Amy Scurria and I have both read Carol's writings since college, and it's totally amazing now to be working so closely with her.  We pinch ourselves regularly.

It's hard to get through the piece without crying, so we think it's going to be good.  Maureen O'Flynn and John Cheek, both regulars at the Met, are performing it with us, which again is a privilege!

Attached is our poster, and the two links below lead you to our video and fundraising campaign, and also where to buy tickets (a very reasonable $25, or $50 for reserved seating).

Video:  We reached our initial goal early on, but every contribution makes a huge difference because opera is EXPENSIVE!  Thank you!

You can buy your tickets here:

And if you want to go more in depth about the piece, here is Carol's awesome synopsis:

Thank you so much for considering supporting us in any way!

Sincerely,
Sara

OVERVIEW

Norma is considered Vincenzo Bellinis magnum opus, and the apex of the bel canto operatic style. The titular high priestess is filled with treasonous desire for a Roman soldier, forcing her to choose between duty and love.  Flowing, lyrical melodies including the infamously difficult soprano aria Casta Diva only add to the passion and heartbreak. Starring Chiara Taigi, Gregory Kunde, Irina Lungu and Giacomo Prestia. From stunning outdoor arena stage at the Teatro Antico Taormina, Italy.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

With most internet radio stations scheduling repeats of past broadcasts, there are only a few "new" ones to report for this Saturday (August 11) that may be of interest.

First off, Rossini enthusiasts get treated to a performance that was given in Vienna of his opera "La Donna del Lago." That's to be heard on ORF.

A performance that took place recently on June 2 of this year will be broadcast on German Radio. The opera? Britten's take on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" coming to us from the opera company in Kassel.

And what weekend could possibly get by us without at least one ever-popular staple? If it isn't "Carmen" , it's "Don Giovanni" -- and if it isn't "Don Giovanni" , it's (you guessed it!) "La Boheme." This particular performance, to be heard on NPR stations, is the last in the series of opera broadcasts from this past season given by the Los Angeles Opera Company. Opera fans who saw the HD-transmission from the Met of Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" will get a chance to hear tenor Stephen Costello in the role of Rodolfo -- a role not dissimilar in temperament to the ardent lover Percy in the Donizetti opera.

Enjoy!

DAVE
