OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
A few unusual offerings are on tap for opera
buffs wanting to tune in to internet radio this coming Saturday (August 4).
For example, on ORF, you'll be able to hear
Michael Schade as Tamino, Malin Hartelius as Pamina, & Thomas Tatzl as
Papageno -- But wait! The opera they'll be performing is NOT Mozart's
"Magic Flute" (surely I jest??). No, instead, it's Peter von Winter's
"The Labyrinth" which he wrote in 1798 (a few years after Mozart's
much more famous opera) & was deliberately conceived as a SEQUEL to the
Mozart masterpiece. The performance itself comes from this summer's Salzburg
Festival (specifically this past Monday night's performance).
Another rather unusual item is an opera by
Benjamin Britten who wrote such searing tragedies as "Peter Grimes"
& "The Rape of Lucretia" & "The Turn of the Screw"
(to name but 3). This one happens to be a comedy -- "Albert Herring"
-- which he penned in the years 1946/1947, & the performance in question
comes to us, courtesy of NPR in their ongoing series of broadcasts from the Los
Angeles Opera (February 2012).
I usually mention broadcasts of complete
operas here every week, but I think I can be forgiven (especially by Maria
Callas fans) for digressing a bit in mentioning that French Radio will be
broadcasting a series of scenes from Rossini's "Armida", Donizetti's
"Poliuto", Bellini's "Il Pirata", and Donizetti's
"Anna Bolena" -- all featuring the legendary diva herself in
performances from the 1950s when her voice was at its considerable peak of
excellence.

Lots to enjoy!

AUDITIONS!
Come sing with us!
If you are an experienced choral singer, sign up for an audition on August 29th or September 5th by sending an email to info@ricco.org or by phoning (401) 521-5670. This season, we'll be singing Vivaldi's Gloria and Britten's St. Nicolas in November; Part's Te Deum and Schubert's Mass No. 3 in Bb Major in March; and various works by Beethoven in May.
We rely on your generosity!
Your gift will help bring to life the choral works of musical masters such as Mozart, Bach, Handel, and Haydn, as well as musical premieres from young contemporary composers, and works that have never been performed in Rhode Island, like Sir Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time. Your contribution also helps to support educational initiatives like our Annual Collegiate Vocal Solo Competition which provides the opportunity for young classical singers to perform as soloists with a large chorus and professional orchestra.
You can make a secure online donation through PayPal by clicking the Donate button below, or by mailing your donation to our office address:
141 Phenix Ave., Cranston, RI 02920.

NEW OPERA !!
A contemporary re-telling of The Scarlet Letter by Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne
From: Sara Jobin
Date: Sat, Jul 28, 2012 at 7:12 PM
Subject: Pearl is happening August 13!
Dear friends,
Many of you know about my collaboration with Carol
Gilligan for the past 4 years, working on a new opera where women's psychology
takes center stage. We will perform the
first workshop of this piece on Monday, August 13th in Lenox, MA as a benefit
for Shakespeare & Company and I would be honored if you could come! It's called Pearl, and it's a contemporary
re-telling of The Scarlet Letter by Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne.
For all of us working on it it's been a labor of love,
and transformational in our lives. The
composer Amy Scurria and I have both read Carol's writings since college, and
it's totally amazing now to be working so closely with her. We pinch ourselves regularly.
It's hard to get through the piece without crying, so
we think it's going to be good. Maureen
O'Flynn and John Cheek, both regulars at the Met, are performing it with us,
which again is a privilege!
Attached is our poster, and the two links below lead
you to our video and fundraising campaign, and also where to buy tickets (a
very reasonable $25, or $50 for reserved seating).
Video: We
reached our initial goal early on, but every contribution makes a huge
difference because opera is EXPENSIVE!
Thank you!

You can buy your tickets here:

And if you want to go more in depth about the piece,
here is Carol's awesome synopsis:

Thank you so much for considering supporting us in any
way!
Sincerely,
Sara

OVERVIEW
Norma is considered Vincenzo Bellinis magnum opus, and the apex of the bel canto operatic style. The titular high priestess is filled with treasonous desire for a Roman soldier, forcing her to choose between duty and love. Flowing, lyrical melodies including the infamously difficult soprano aria Casta Diva only add to the passion and heartbreak. Starring Chiara Taigi, Gregory Kunde, Irina Lungu and Giacomo Prestia. From stunning outdoor arena stage at the Teatro Antico Taormina, Italy.

Listener's Choice:
by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
A carnally minded count, his neglected wife, their wily servants and a young page who falls in love with every woman he sees: Mozart’s greatest comedy contains a cornucopia of wonderfully flawed and human characters who will amuse and delight you. Soprano Danielle de Niese “has a voice made for Mozart: bright, beautiful, agile and creamy” (National Public Radio). The “charismatic, vocally robust young Italian bass Luca Pisaroni…is an impulsive and charming Figaro” (The New York Times). Music Director Nicola Luisotti conducts this perfectly cast production with glamorous soprano Ellie Dehn as the Countess and former Adler Fellow Lucas Meachem as her philandering husband.
