OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Not much happening on internet radio this
coming Saturday (March 10), with many stations simply offering re-broadcasts of
performances that have already been aired on various other stations. Not even
the Met is offering a free LIVE audio-stream -- not until a week from tomorrow,
that is.
But it's not all bad, especially when the Saturday afternoon Met broadcast happens to be Mozart's masterpiece (ONE of his masterpieces, at any rate) "Don Giovanni" with the same cast that was featured in the HD-transmission from last October. This LIVE performance can be heard on many radio stations on the internet.
French Radio, on the other hand, brings us the World Premiere of Philippe Fenelon's new opera "La Cerisaie" ("The Cherry Orchard") which, as you may have guessed from the English translation of the French title, is based on the Chekhov play which many of you may be familiar with. Every new opera that comes along is certainly worth checking out, IMO (although, in some cases, the listening experience turns out to be less rewarding than one would hope for.) After all, Verdi's "La Traviata" & Bizet's "Carmen" and Puccini's "Madame Butterfly" were not instant hits either, when they were first performed !!! (hard to believe, I know)
