Anna Bolena
"Divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived..."
The tragic story of English King Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn (Anna Bolena), after she fell from grace..
Anna Netrebko as Anna Bolena |
★ ‘Anna Bolena. ’The soprano Anna Netrebko sings the daunting title role of this Donizetti opera in the Met’s premiere production of this great and overlooked work. Ms. Netrebko, in her vocal prime, with regal bearing and affecting vulnerability, is splendid in the role, based on the historic Anne Boleyn, especially in the climactic “mad scene. The appealing cast includes Ekaterina Gubanova as Giovanna (Jane Seymour), Ildar Abdrazakov as Enrico (Henry VIII) and Stephen Costello as Riccardo (Lord Percy).
To hear Anna sing in the Vienna production last spring, click on "Week of..." above.
*See right-hand column for information about attending a Met-HD simulcast.

German composer Richard Strauss's Salome is arguably considered the first modern opera and his first major operatic success. The theme of the story is obsession: Herod, with Salome; Salome, with Jokanaan; and Jokanaan, with God.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
New York's Metropolitan Opera -- besides offering an exciting HD-transmission this Saturday of Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" in select area movie theatres -- will be broadcasting a LIVE performance of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" tomorrow night (Thursday, Oct. 13) on their free audio-stream. The cast, headed by baritone Marius Kwiecin, will feature many of the same singers who will be appearing in October 29's HD-transmission of this same opera.

You can still have access to plenty of opera this Saturday, even if you won't be at the "Anna Bolena" telecast. ORF, for example, will be airing a LIVE performance of Verdi's "La Traviata" with Natalie Dessay singing the role of Violetta. Later this season, she will be singing this same role at the Met and in yet another HD-transmission.

Stravinsky's final opera -- "The Rake's Progress" (1951) -- can be heard on French Radio. This one is from Nancy/Lorraine and dates from this past September 23.

Then, those of you who may have been yearning all these years to hear a performance of Stenhammar's opera "Tirfing" (1898-1901) will get your chance this Saturday when Swedish Radio broadcasts a LIVE performance of this rare 3-act opera, courtesy of the Malmo Opera.

Or, in case you missed it a year ago, there's Smetana's bittersweet comedy "The Kiss" which is getting another broadcast, since it was originally performed last October 30 at the Wexford Festival.

The conclusion of Wagner's Ring Cycle -- "Die Gotterdammerung" -- from the San Francisco Opera can be heard on NPR.
