Boris Gudunov
Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" stars bass René Pape as the 16th-century Russian tsar whose reign is challenged by a novice monk (Aleksandrs Antonenko) masquerading as the dead Tsarevich Dimitri, whose murder opened the door for Boris' ascension.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
This Saturday (August 27), there are at least 4 opera broadcasts that may be of interest to most listeners, one of which is Mozart's ever-popular "The Magic Flute" as it gets an outing on CBC Radio 2, in a performance by the Canadian Opera Company that took place this past January.
Along similar lines, there's Hasse's 1765 opera "Romolo & Ersilia" which can be heard on ORF in a performance from Innsbruck. (Actually, it's Friday night's performance that is being broadcast on Saturday.)
The versatile and still-active Placido Domingo takes the title role in Alfano's "Cyrano de Bergerac" which NPR has on tap, in a performance by the San Francisco Opera that took place last October.
Then -- if you're in the mood for some 21st century opera -- why not try Detlev Glanert's latest opera? It's "Das Holzschiff" ("The Wooden Ship") which was performed last month in Nurnberg.

Or -- you might want to stock up on milk & bread (etc.) just in case Sunday turns out to be "wet & crazy" (!!!!)
Enjoy the music!
DAVE
