NORMA

Radvanovsky can add her name to the list,” declared the Huffington Post when Sondra Radvanovsky made her Met role debut as Norma in 2013. The 2017–18 season opens with a new production of Bellini’s masterpiece, starring Radvanovsky as the Druid priestess and Joyce DiDonato as her archrival, Adalgisa—a casting coup for bel canto fans. Tenor Joseph Calleja is Pollione, Norma’s unfaithful lover, and Carlo Rizzi conducts. Sir David McVicar’s evocative production sets the action deep in a Druid forest where nature and ancient ritual rule.
Production a gift of Veronica Atkins

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

Lots of opera on the internet in the next few days, in addition to this Saturday afternoon's LIVE HD-transmission from the Met of Bellini's "Norma" with Sondra Radvanovsky, Joyce DiDonato, and Joseph Calleja in leading roles. As in past seasons, this will be shown in selected movie theatres and is the first of this season's series of HD-transmissions from the Met.

Before that, however, tomorrow (Thursday, October 5) Radio 3 (RAI) is broadcasting a performance from Rome of Karol Szymanowski's best-known opera "King Roger."

Then on Saturday, for those of us who may be staying at home rather than watching "Norma" at a particular movie theatre, there's Puccini's "La Boheme" on Radio 3 (BBC) in a performance from London's Royal Opera House.

If 19th century French opera happens to appeal to you, the performance on Swedish Radio of "Lakme" by Leo Delibes is bound to delight. It's a LIVE performance from Malmo.

On the other hand, opera fans with more daring tastes may want to check out the LIVE performance on ORF (Austria) of Prokofiev's "The Gambler" (based on the Dostoyevsky novel of the same name). This one comes to us direct from the Vienna State Opera.

Russian opera of a decidedly more conservative style can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands). The station has scheduled the June 15, 2017 performance from Moscow of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Snow Maiden."

If you still haven't had your fill of opera by the end of the day on Saturday, there are 2 noteworthy opera broadcasts scheduled for Sunday (October 8). You may choose to listen to Auber's melodic comic opera "Fra Diavolo" on Radio 3 (RAI) in a performance from Rome -- Or you may decide on listening to yet another performance of Verdi's "Rigoletto" which is being broadcast LIVE from Lyric Opera of Chicago, with tenor Matthew Polenzani in the role of the Duke of Mantua.
("Fra Diavolo" - www.radio3.rai.it/)
("Rigoletto" - http://www.wfmt.com/)

Then on Tuesday (October 10) at 7:25 pm, the Met is offering a FREE live audio-stream of one of Mozart's most beloved works: "The Magic Flute."

Enjoy!
